{"id":440693,"date":"2011-06-14T07:00:27","date_gmt":"2011-06-14T07:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/06\/14\/namibia-plastic-packaging-strike-off\/"},"modified":"2011-06-14T07:00:27","modified_gmt":"2011-06-14T07:00:27","slug":"namibia-plastic-packaging-strike-off","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/06\/14\/namibia-plastic-packaging-strike-off\/","title":{"rendered":"Namibia: Plastic Packaging Strike Off"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"35.3283666011\">\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.namibian.com.na\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/img\/static\/publishers\/minibanners\/namibian180.jpg\" alt=\"The Namibian (Windhoek)\" title=\"Visit The Namibian (Windhoek)\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nico Smit<\/p>\n<p>13 June 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>The week-long strike over a wage dispute by employees of the Plastic Packaging group of companies was finally called off on Thursday evening after an agreement was reached by the two parties.<\/p>\n<p>Employees based at Plastic Packaging and Polyoak Packaging Namibia in Windhoek, and Namibia Polymer Recyclers had been on strike since last Monday after their employer refused to meet a wage and housing allowance increase demand.<\/p>\n<p>Metal and Allied Namibian Workers Union (Manwu) Windhoek Branch Project Coordinator Justina Jonas said that their members had called for a N$150 per month wage increase and N$300 per month housing allowance increase.<\/p>\n<p>Manwu representative met with Plastic Packaging management last Monday, however, the meeting ended unsuccessfully as neither party gave in to the other&#8217;s demands.<\/p>\n<p>From last Tuesday, the striking workers pitched tents outside the premises at Polyoak Packaging Namibia and Plastic Packaging, where they camped out for the entire week.<\/p>\n<p>Late Thursday afternoon, Manwu representatives again met with the firm&#8217;s management, as well as with an official from the Office of the Labour Commissioner to mediate the negotiations.
