{"id":439906,"date":"2011-06-12T18:29:50","date_gmt":"2011-06-12T18:29:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/06\/12\/zuma-opens-tripartite-fta-talks\/"},"modified":"2011-06-12T18:29:50","modified_gmt":"2011-06-12T18:29:50","slug":"zuma-opens-tripartite-fta-talks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/06\/12\/zuma-opens-tripartite-fta-talks\/","title":{"rendered":"Zuma Opens Tripartite FTA Talks"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"39.2227854212\">\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sapa.co.za\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/img\/static\/publishers\/minibanners\/sapa180.gif\" alt=\"South African Press Association (Johannesburg)\" title=\"Visit South African Press Association (Johannesburg)\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>12 June 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>Johannesburg \u2014 Africa&#8217;s proposed Free Trade Area (FTA) would require better transport infrastructure and strategies to reduce poverty, President Jacob Zuma said in Johannesburg on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need to align developmental strategies and programmes aimed at poverty alleviation, under-development, food security and the like across national, regional and continental boundaries,&#8221; he said in remarks prepared for delivery.<\/p>\n<p>He was speaking at the SADC Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa) and the East African Community (EAC) summit.<\/p>\n<p>The FTA, which would allow members to trade without import quotas or tariffs, would span 26 countries from the northern to the southern tip of Africa and integrate three existing trade blocs.<\/p>\n<p>It would help accelerate regional integration, aimed at ensuring African countries traded with each other on better terms.<\/p>\n<p>Zuma said removing barriers to intra-African trade would in themselves not lead to the realisation of &#8220;our full potential for growth and development&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We must simultaneously design interventions that will&#8230; fully take advantage of more open regional markets.<\/p>\n<div readability=\"31.0492610837\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/img\/csi\/00160812_34bd7948b269c21f4e1b5b4810eb8a89\/w260x.jpg\" width=\"260\" height=\"131\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theeastafrican.co.ke\">East African<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Long lines of trucks at African border crossings signal the need for easier movement of goods between countries.
