{"id":439888,"date":"2011-06-12T14:59:45","date_gmt":"2011-06-12T14:59:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/06\/12\/jonathan-urged-to-immortalise-abiola\/"},"modified":"2011-06-12T14:59:45","modified_gmt":"2011-06-12T14:59:45","slug":"jonathan-urged-to-immortalise-abiola","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/06\/12\/jonathan-urged-to-immortalise-abiola\/","title":{"rendered":"Jonathan Urged to Immortalise Abiola"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"67.4652505195\">\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thisdaylive.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/img\/static\/publishers\/minibanners\/thisday180.jpg\" alt=\"This Day (Lagos)\" title=\"Visit This Day (Lagos)\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ndubuisi Ugah<\/p>\n<p>12 June 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>National Coordinator of Ijaw Monitoring Group, Comrade Joseph Evah, Saturday called on President Goodluck Jonathan to immortalise the late Chief MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>His call came on a day Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka and former Governor Bola Tinubu of Lagos State are expected to converge on Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, for the 18th anniversary of the annulment of the presidential election .<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to THISDAY from his hospital bed in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, Evah said Jonathan should immortalise Abiola, since, according to him, this year was symbolic, given the fact that the April general elections were not annulled by reactionary agents.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that since President Jonathan emerged from a &#8220;free and fair election process,&#8221; it therefore, implied that the federal government should honour the late Abiola, who was overwhelmingly voted for by Nigerians during the June 12, 1993 presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;June 12 is symbolic because it ushered in what today is known as the legacy of free and fair polls. And since President Goodluck Jonathan, our own son, emerged from the symbolic process, then it means he (the president) should immortalise him (Abiola).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We thank God that they did not allow it go the way of the annulled June 12, 1993,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The IMG coordinator, who recalled that what had been accorded the late Abiola in the past was mere &#8220;lip service honour, saluted Nigerians for not allowing reactionary forces to destablise the April general elections.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He further stressed that &#8220;it was important for Nigerians to continue to kick against agents of destabilisation, especially as the nation moves on in the institutionalisation of democracy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Other dignitaries expected to join Soyinka and Tinubu during the June 12 anniversary in Abeokuta include former Governors Olusegun Osoba and Alhaji Balarabe Musa of Ogun and Kaduna States respectively, Chief Frank Kokori, Prof. Pat Utomi, Mr Olisa Agbakoba, Dr. Dipo Fasina and Mrs Hafsat Abiola-Constello, among others.<\/p>\n<p>The Ogun State government had declared June 13 a public holiday to mark the day, which incidentally fell on Sunday (yesterday).<\/p>\n<p>The public holiday was announced on Friday in Abeokuta by the Senior Special Assistant, Media and Communication to Governor Ibikunle Amosun, Mrs. Funmi Wakama.<\/p>\n<p>According to Wakama, the ceremony will also feature a Democracy Walk, which will commence from the Ake Palace Ground and terminate at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<fieldset>\n<legend align=\"center\"><strong>More News on allAfrica.com<\/strong><\/legend>\n<\/fieldset>\n<p>AllAfrica &#8211; All the Time<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"c|main|main|id|0CxDDWg2AIwu3FLr\"><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>View post:<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/stories\/201106120020.html\" title=\"Jonathan Urged to Immortalise Abiola\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jonathan Urged to Immortalise Abiola<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> Ndubuisi Ugah 12 June 2011 National Coordinator of Ijaw Monitoring Group, Comrade Joseph Evah, Saturday called on President Goodluck Jonathan to immortalise the late Chief MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
