Abuja -The ICPC\u00a0 has called on the\u00a0 National Assembly to pass a bill establishing special courts to fast track the prosecution of\u00a0 corruption cases.<\/p>\n

ICPC Acting Chairman, Mrs\u00a0 Abang-Rose Wushishi,\u00a0 made the call at the opening of the Ondo State Office of\u00a0 the National Anti-Corruption Volunteer Corps, NAVC, in Akure.<\/p>\n

\u00a0A statement issued in Abuja, Friday, \u00a0by Mr Mike Sore, ICPC\u2019s\u00a0 Head of Public Enlightenment,\u00a0 said Wushishi was represented at the occasion by the National Coordinator of\u00a0 NAVC, Mr\u00a0 Folu Olamiti.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Wushishi, according to the\u00a0 statement,\u00a0 said\u00a0 the\u00a0 nation\u2019s criminal justice system was\u00a0 an\u00a0 impediment to the war against corruption.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThough we have been steadily fulfilling the mandate of the commission, Nigeria\u2019s criminal justice system has largely remained an obstructive impediment to progress of the crusade.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cIncessant court injunctions and unnecessary adjournments are basically responsible for the ineffective adjudication of corruption cases.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201dThis has necessitated the ICPC to establish the NAVC as one of the preventive mechanisms against corruption.<\/p>\n

\u201c It is necessary that the National Assembly should look into making an Act that provides special courts to fast-track corruption cases,\u2019\u2019\u00a0 the statement quoted her as saying.<\/p>\n

Wushishi, however,\u00a0 cautioned members of\u00a0 NAVC against engaging in any act capable of tarnishing the image of the anti-graft agency.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cAs volunteers, you are not to arrest, investigate or prosecute anybody. Avoid any act of lawlessness in this office, because lawlessness is another form of corruption,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The ICPC boss said NAVC as a voluntary\u00a0 body\u00a0 was charged with the responsibility of monitoring the integrity of\u00a0\u00a0 citizens and\u00a0 as well as\u00a0 mobilising the public\u00a0 against corruption. (NAN)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
