Saamasang Federation, affiliated to Child Fund The Gambia, last Friday, 3rd of June 2011 staged a mega quiz competition among upper basic schools and senior secondary schools in the West Coast Region. The event was held at the Brikama Upper Basic School ground.

Speaking on the occasion, Fabakary Fadera, the accountant of Saamasang Federation, expressed delight at the competition. According to him, Saamasang Federation has been operating in the West Coast Region for the past 25 years and that they have been intervening in the education sector by sponsoring students, assisting children from poor and needy families, and supporting schools in the area of construction, among others.

He said Saamasang as a federation is aware of the challenges faced by the education sector, and its core target group. He urged other institutions to come forward and sponsor the schools participating in the quiz competition and reiterated that students in the upper basic schools are eligible to join the quiz competition to represent their schools and so are encouraged to do so.

Mbemba Jawara, the chairman of Kombo Central Parent Teacher Association (PTA), said the importance of education cannot be overemphasized. He also affirmed that Samasang Federation has been complementing government’s efforts in various ways, before urging students to make their books their friends.

For his part, Buba Manneh, the cluster monitor of Kombo Central, in his remarks, described young people as future leaders and thanked the Saamasang Federation for supporting students in the West Coast Region.

Amadou Tambedou, the Youth and Child Protection officer of Saamasang, urged the contesting schools to take the competition seriously. The quiz competition was held among the following upper basic schools: Brikama, Jamisa, Kabafita, Bottrop, Darsilami and Kitty.

At the end of the competition, Kabafita Upper Basic School emerged winner, scoring 610 points and was given a cash amount of D2,500 with a trophy. The best female participant was Kaddijatou Saidy from Kabafita Upper Basic School, who went home with one packet of exercise books.
