{"id":439096,"date":"2011-06-10T03:59:40","date_gmt":"2011-06-10T03:59:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/06\/10\/bail-bankole-knows-fate-today\/"},"modified":"2011-06-10T03:59:40","modified_gmt":"2011-06-10T03:59:40","slug":"bail-bankole-knows-fate-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/06\/10\/bail-bankole-knows-fate-today\/","title":{"rendered":"Bail: Bankole knows fate today"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"85\">\n<p>By Kolade Larewaju &#038; Ikechukwu Nnochiri<\/p>\n<p>ABUJA \u2014 Justice Donatus Okorowo of a Federal High Court in Abuja, will today, determine the merit of an application seeking the release of the embattled former Speaker, House of Representatives, Mr Dimeji Bankole, from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, where he has spent six days even as the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Ogun State has urged the EFCC not to use him as a scape goat.<\/p>\n<p>Following the refusal of the trial Judge to accede to an oral application made by his lead counsel, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, shortly after he pleaded not guilty to the 16-count charge preferred against him by the ant-graft agency on Monday, his team of lawyers, promptly filed a formal bail application before the high court on that same day.<\/p>\n<p>Bankole is pleading the court to release him on bail pending the hearing and determination of the substantive charge against him, saying he will be available for trial.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the PDP Elders Council under the leadership of Alhaji Sule Onabiyi after a meeting in Abeokuta, the state capital said Bankole should be given fair treatment until he is proven guilty of the allegations levelled against him.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement issued in Abeokuta, the Council said as much as it would not hinder the anti-graft agency from doing its constitutional responsibilities, \u201cthe former Speaker should be accorded all the courtesies and fundamental human rights of a citizen especially given his high office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the statement, \u2018\u2019We elders and members of the PDP in Ogun state note the current travail of our son and formerSpeaker, House of Representatives, Hon. Sabur Oladimeji Bankole and call for fair treatment. We recognize the need for Anti-Graft Agency to do their assignments, but we want to plead that\u00a0 the\u00a0 former Speaker be deemed innocent until proven guilty\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While saying that all human beings were equal before the law, the Council noted: \u2018\u2019 We hope our son is not being used as a scapegoat in this case\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Comments are moderated.
