LAGOS \u2014 The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Hafiz Ringim, yesterday in Lagos, said there was no proof yet to ascertain that those behind the gruesome murder of the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, the Divisional Crime Officer, DCO, and other Policemen attached to Badagry Police division, last month close to Ibereko Military barracks, were military men.<\/p>\n

He has, therefore, challenged anyone with evidence of proof\u00a0 to come forth with such, rather than casting aspersion on either of the security agencies.<\/p>\n

His remark followed the displeasure of some policemen over what they described as\u00a0 the IG\u2019s \u201cbiased and unpatriotic\u201d way of handling the issue. Most of the aggrieved policemen who hinged their grievances on the IG\u2019s assertion that those responsible for the death of the policemen were not Military men, said such remark showed the extent of disregard the Police hierarchy had for its subordinates.<\/p>\n

Speaking during an interview with newsmen at the commissioning of the corporate head office complex of the Nigeria Police Force MicroFinance Bank Plc, Ringim said: \u201cWe do not accuse persons unless we have a proof that they are culpable.<\/p>\n

Do you have one single person that said he saw one military officer or one identified person in uniform? I am not holding brief for the Army. The law proves one innocent\u00a0 until otherwise proven guilty.\u201d
Investigation into the dastardly act, he said, had commenced, vowing that no stone would be left unturned until those who were responsible are fished out and brought to book.
The IG was however mute on the fate of the three policemen alleged to have caused trouble that fateful day, saying \u201cWhether the three police men that have been arrested have been found culpable or not, the true picture of what really happened will be found out and those behind the shameful act will be brought o book.\u201d
Although he did not give a time frame when the outcome of the investigation by both the Police and Army would be made public but he assured that the security agencies\u00a0 were on top of the situation, saying \u201cwe are squarely addressing that crisis. This is the first time that a serving Chief of Army Staff has gone to visit a serving Inspector General of Police in order to dialogue and discuss the way forward. And jointly we addressed our respective services and assured all of fair play when a common matter afflicts all of us.\u201d
On the worrisome development about the Boko Haram activities, the IG hinted that the Police was still strategising, assuring that no stone would be left unturned in their effort to rid the society of crime, irrespective of its shape or form.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
