Aston Villa have issued a statement to provide their fans an update regarding their search for a new manager.

Mark Hughes, Steve McLaren and Rafael Benitez have all been strongly linked to the Villa hot seat, but the latest favourite is Wigan’s Roberto Martinez with many reports suggesting that a deal taking the Spaniard to Villa Park is close to being finalised.

Chief Executive Paul Faulkner’s comments on the club’s official website, though, indicated a resolution was not imminent.

“The Club is conscious of the keen interest in developments over the appointment of our new manager,” he said.

“When the process has reached an appropriate point we can assure our fans that we will be clear and forthright.

“We are focused right now on trying to secure the best candidate who will complement the Club’s commitment to being true to our heritage, competitiveness and passionate fan base.

“We will update fans again when the process is more advanced.”

McLaren and Benitez are both unemployed and looking to return to Premier League management after short, disappointing spells at Wolfsburg and Inter, repectively.

Whoever is appointed at Villa Park will be the club’s third manager in as many seasons after Gerard Houllier and Martin O’Neill.
