Republic of Ireland striker Simon Cox has promised to be a success for both club and country next season after enduring a frustrating campaign last time out.

The 24-year-old was predominantly used from the bench for West Brom last season but has impressed for the national team, scoring on his debut against Northern Ireland and following it up with the second goal in his side’s famous win over Italy.

Cox made 23 appearances in all competitions for West Brom last season – 12 of which were starts, scoring just four goals in the process but after impressing for his country he is keen to take his form into next season.

He told reporters: “It’s been a great few months. I have enjoyed my club football and then to get the call-up to come away with Ireland was a terrific boost for me.

“Then to get a goal on my debut, and then get a goal against Italy was just great.

“I am definitely going to try to get more games in the Premier League next season and hopefully if I get that, more games for the Republic.”

Ireland’s 2-0 victory over Italy on Monday night capped a glorious two weeks for Trapattoni’s men, as they secured four wins out of four with a clean sheet in every match.

“Hunty did what he does best, he got at the guy and went past him, and all he had to do was find me and I tapped it into an empty net,” explained Cox.

“It’s an unbelievable honour for me. It was a little bit too far for my family to travel, but I am sure they were all watching and it meant a lot to me.”
