The mother to the late Olympic Marathon Champion Samuel Wanjiru may not be taken to court after all.<\/p>\n

Hannah Wanjiru was supposed to be arraigned in court on Monday charged with assault and creating disturbance.<\/p>\n

No explanation from the police has been given in the matter.<\/p>\n

A source who attended a meeting held between Wanjiru, Nyandarua deputy OCPD Jacob Kanake, DCIO Isaac Onyango and Nyahururu DC Lucy Mulili indicated that “a deal had been struck”.<\/p>\n

The source which requested for anonymity said the meeting agreed to change earlier prosecution decision.<\/p>\n

Wanjiru had been arrested over the weekend at Gatimu village in Nyandarua West district after she stormed into a grave marking ceremony conducted by the athlete’s grandfather Samuel Kamau Njoroge.<\/p>\n

She drew a panga from her handbag and at least two people were injured during the scuffle.<\/p>\n

Wanjiru is said to have been told that she would be given a reprieve, if she promises to maintain peace.<\/p>\n

“The mother said she would cooperate with the funeral committee and let the process move on smoothly without more complications”, said the source.<\/p>\n

The source added that she was warned that she would be taken to court if she failed to honour her promise, where she would be charged with assault and creating disturbance.<\/p>\n

The deputy OCPD was at pains to explain to the press why she could not be arraigned in court. He left a media conference in a huff.<\/p>\n

Nyahururu deputy mayor Irene Wachuka expressed disappointment over the issue saying police had failed by treating Wanjiru with what she termed as “unwarranted preference”.<\/p>\n

“A crime is a crime and anybody who commits it should be taken to court as the law stipulates, regardless of the circumstances, without showing favouritism, and speedily for the sake of justice of those offended”, she said.<\/p>\n

The deputy mayor said police had shown leniency by being reluctant to withdraw the panga Wanjiru was wielding at her relatives.<\/p>\n
