LAGOS\u2014At least 30 un-employed licensed Nigerian pilots and engineers, yesterday, stormed the office of the Nigerian Association of Aircraft and Pilots ( NAAPE)\u00a0 protesting the influx of expatriates in the country\u2019s aviation industry.<\/p>\n

The protesters, who demonstrated within the airport environment of the Murtala\u00a0 Muhammed Airport, MMA, Lagos, lamented that the incursion of expatriate pilots and engineers in the industry had rendered them jobless, despite their qualifications for the job.<\/p>\n

One of the protesters, who did not disclose his identity, alleged that\u00a0 aeronautic engineers\u2019 graduate, not even type-rated on any aircraft, were\u00a0 given employment by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, to issue\u00a0 license to aircraft maintenance engineers.<\/p>\n

The aggrieved protester also purported that NCAA had not conducted any license\u00a0 examinations for upcoming aviation practitioners for almost a year, stressing\u00a0 that the situation was not good for the development of the sub-sector.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cWith a deeper research by design of their profession, aeronautic\u00a0 personnel are supposed to be in the factory where aircraft are being\u00a0 manufactured.<\/p>\n

\u201cAeronautical engineers are destroying the future of licensed\u00a0 aircraft maintenance engineers in the country.\u201d
The protesters also challenged President Gioodluck Jonathan to appoint a\u00a0 technocrat from the industry, preferably an air traffic controller, cabin crew\u00a0 personnel, pilots and engineers as the minister of aviation in this\u00a0 dispensation.<\/p>\n

They said, \u201cIn the air transport industry, aeronautical engineers belong to the\u00a0 designers and the manufacturers of aircraft, they have little relevance in the\u00a0 airline operation because they are not licensed in practise.<\/p>\n

In Nigeria, we only\u00a0 fly and maintain aircraft and the core professionals are the aforementioned\u00a0 professionals that are licensed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Addressing the aggrieved personnel, the National President of NAAPE, Engr. Isaac\u00a0 Balami, urged the protesters to be patient with the government and assured them\u00a0 that President Jonathan would listen to the voice of stakeholders and\u00a0 professionals in the industry by appointing core aviator as the next minister of\u00a0 aviation.<\/p>\n

He said:\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cAs far as NAAPE is concerned, you should be patience, because this\u00a0 agitation commenced not too long ago and we should not raise any dust in the\u00a0 sector. NAAPE and other professionals are trying to canvass for the appointment\u00a0 of aviation professional as the Minister of Aviation and I\u2019m sure we are on\u00a0 course.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
