GENEVA\u2014The International Social Security Association (ISSA), Wednesday, in Geneva, Switzerland, commended the Federal Government for passing into law the Employees\u2019 Compensation Act.<\/p>\n

ISSA said it was particularly pleased that the administration of the\u00a0 new policy was handed over to the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund\u00a0 (NSITF).<\/p>\n

ISSA\u2019s secretary general,\u00a0\u00a0 Mr. Hans Konkolewski, gave the commendation while responding to a question during the media briefing on\u00a0 the social protection policy of the International Labour Organisation at the on- going 100th session\u00a0 of the\u00a0 International Labour Conference ( ILC)<\/p>\n

Although, NSITF is yet to secure a take-off grant for the implementation of the law, Mr. Konkolewski said, \u201cpooling of funds makes a lot of sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

ISSA is a working partner of the ILO.<\/p>\n

The NSITF is represented at the conference.<\/p>\n

However, the\u00a0 ILO committee on social protection estimates that\u00a0 about five billion people around the wolds have inadequate social protection while one billion have nothing.<\/p>\n

According to Mr. Michael Gichon , coordinator of the Social Protection Committee of the ILO,\u00a0 urged governments around the world to invest in\u00a0 basic social security.
The Pension Reform and the recently introduced Employees Compensation Act are regarded as forms of\u00a0 social protection for the people.<\/p>\n

Nigeria is one of the countries that have ratified\u00a0 the social security ( minimum standards) Convention 102 of 1952.
Mr. Gichon said the\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ILO\u00a0 is working with organisations such as the International MonetarY Fund,\u00a0 World Bank, ISSA, World Health Organisation,\u00a0 United Nations Development Programme and United Nations International Childrens Emergency Fund to ensure that more countries put in place social protection measures for the old, young children, working people and other vulnerable groups.<\/p>\n

He said about 45 countries have now ratified the ILO Convention 102 of 1952 which he said is being modified.
Mr. Gichon said by next year, the ILO committee on social protection should be negotiating a modern version of the social protection convention.<\/p>\n

He however said social protection should be obtained\u00a0 through social dialogue of employees, employers and government.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the International Laour\u00a0 Organisation ( ILO) is to mark\u00a0 World Day Against\u00a0 Child Labour\u00a0 in\u00a0 50 counties\u00a0 including Nigeria on June 12.<\/p>\n

The theme for the day is\u00a0\u00a0 \u201c Children in hazardous work: what we know , what we need to do\u201d.<\/p>\n

The 100th session of the ILC\u00a0 is expected to feature\u00a0\u00a0 discussions on the prolonged job crisis\u00a0 which the ILO\u00a0 said has defied \u201c global efforts by governments, and businesses to generate employment and end the growing hardships people are suffering in their search for work\u201d.<\/p>\n

About 4,000 delegates representing employers, governments and trade unions\u00a0 from 183 member countries of the ILO are attending the conference.<\/p>\n

Nigeria is represented at the level of government, the Nigeria Employers Consultative Association, the Trade Union Congress and the Nigeria Labour Congress.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
