Addis Ababa \u2014 African Union Commission chief Jean Ping has embarked on a visit to Darfur, aimed at easing growing tension between the Sudanese government and the international peacekeepers in the region.<\/p>\n

Ping’s nine-member delegation visited El Fasher, North Darfur, where he was received by Deputy Joint Special Representative Mohamed Yonis and leadership of the AU-UN Hybrid Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), according to a statement.<\/p>\n

UNAMID has often raised complaints about its inability to move freely in protection of the Darfur civilians, especially during armed military operations across Darfur, when its troops are often forced to tactical patrol fights on the orders of Sudanese government officials.<\/p>\n

“We have to try to resolve problems together,” said Ping, whose visit to the Sudan is aimed at enhancing relations between the Union and the Sudanese Government.<\/p>\n

He was accompanied by Ambassador Mahmoud Kane, head of the AU Liaison Office in Sudan.<\/p>\n

Ping praised UNAMID’s role in and support for the recent All Darfur Stakeholders’ Conference in Qatar.<\/p>\n

“After receiving good news from Doha, we hope that the situation in Darfur will be improved,” he said.<\/p>\n

The AU chief noted that the internally displaced persons in Darfur were going back to their villages and the AU official also stressed the need for more recovery and development activities.<\/p>\n

The chairperson was later received by the North Darfur Governor, with whom he discussed developments in the Darfur conflict and increased collaboration between state authorities and the Mission in providing relief to those most affected by the instability.<\/p>\n

Ping’s arrival in Darfur is part of a three-day mission to the Sudan, where he also plans to meet with officials in Khartoum and Juba.<\/p>\n
