Multimillion dollar corruption accused Esmerelda Majiedt and her husband, Donkie Majiedt, did not hold back when it came to spending money on property and flashy cars and motorcycles.<\/p>\n

The couple and their four sons own a house in Pionierspark, a 2008 Chev Lumina, a 2010 Suzuki, a 2008 Suzuki Hyabusa, a 2007 Aeon Minikolt, an Aeon Cobra, a Suzuki GSXR, a Honda Civic and a Land Cruiser and a catering, d\u00e9cor and entertainment business.<\/p>\n

Most of the luxury vehicles were paid for in cash.<\/p>\n

These revelations came to light during Majiedt’s formal bail application in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court yesterday.<\/p>\n

From the onset, Public Prosecutor Hans Thourob indicated to Magistrate Ruth Herunga that the State opposes bail.<\/p>\n

Thourob said releasing the 46-year-old Majiedt on bail would neither help the administration of justice nor be in the public interest.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, Thourob argued, the corruption allegations which Majiedt faces are “quite serious as it involves an amount of N$71 million” and the investigations have not been finalised.<\/p>\n

Also, Majiedt might again – as statements under oath indicate – interfere with the probe or State witnesses, Thourob claimed.<\/p>\n

Not only could Majiedt abscond if released on bail, but she could also commit other offences, the public prosecutor charged.<\/p>\n

During yesterday’s application, Majiedt admitted that she was convicted on a fraud charge while being employed at Standard Bank in the 1980s.<\/p>\n

She said she was released on parole after spending “between two and three days” behind bars as she was expecting her first-born, Diego, at the time.<\/p>\n

She claimed that she always shared this conviction with prospective employers during job interviews.<\/p>\n

Despite this alleged honesty, Majiedt managed to secure a job as a bookkeeper at Froswa Imag Agencies, as an administrative clerk at auditing firm Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) and then she landed at AfriSam Cement until her resignation at the end of January this year.<\/p>\n

It was at AfriSam Cement where Majiedt is alleged to have gone on a four-year corruption spree involving more than N$71 million.<\/p>\n

She was nabbed on April 4 by officials of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).<\/p>\n

Since her arrest, Majiedt spent 32 days in the Windhoek Central Hospital.<\/p>\n

Yesterday, she testified that she has suffered from hypertension since her youngest son’s birth ten years ago. Apart from that, she also has a skin disease which “sometimes results in allergies” and swollen leg and feet “which are sometimes very painful”.<\/p>\n

A persistent ear infection has also forced her to visit a specialist on a monthly basis. Sometimes, she testified, this leads to a hearing difficulty.<\/p>\n

As a result of these ailments, she needs to take six tablets and some syrup daily, Majiedt told Magistrate Herunga.<\/p>\n

She also said that there are no beds or mattresses in the Wanaheda Police station where she is being detained and sometimes some of the approximately 35 women have to sleep in the shower or the toilet. They each also only have one blanket.<\/p>\n

As a result of these conditions, she has ordered some extra blankets from home and cleaning products to disinfect the toilet and shower.<\/p>\n

Additionally, she said, she is worried how her family copes without her contribution to the household.<\/p>\n

At times, she said, she does not want to accept the food they bring her to the Police cells, because “I think they suffer”.<\/p>\n

At AfriSam, she earned about N$15 000 a month, while her husband earns about N$25 000 a month in commission where he works.The family business, Merjit Magic D\u00e9cor and Events, rakes in between N$80 000 and N$124 000 on average per month.<\/p>\n

She claimed she does not know who the State witnesses are and will not interfere with them “even if the court ordered me to interfere.<\/p>\n

“I am going to fully cooperate to a certain extent. I don’t have any intention to take my life or run away from this problem.”<\/p>\n

Magistrate Herunga postponed the bail application to tomorrow.<\/p>\n
