Wayne Rooney<\/a> has welcomed the potential signing of Phil Jones<\/a> to Manchester United<\/a>, stating that the defender is one of the toughest opponents he has come across.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jones is expected to complete his \u00a316 million transfer after undergoing a medical at Manchester United\u2019s Carrington training ground today.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPhil jones is a good young English player. 1 of the toughest defenders I played against last season. Can play midfield to,\u201d Rooney posted on his official Twitter page.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, Rooney quickly distanced himself from any insinuation that a deal was done.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI don’t know if phil jones is signing for us just saying he is a good player that’s all. I haven’t got a clue if he is signing or not,” added Rooney.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 19-year-old centre-half, who has been linked with a host of Premier League clubs including Arsenal and Liverpool has opted for the champions and will compete for a place in the United starting eleven with Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Jonny Evans and fellow England Under-21 international Chris Smalling.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
