{"id":437573,"date":"2011-06-07T17:21:51","date_gmt":"2011-06-07T17:21:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/06\/07\/zoning-why-we-can%e2%80%99t-congratulate-tambuwal-%e2%80%93-pdp\/"},"modified":"2011-06-07T17:21:51","modified_gmt":"2011-06-07T17:21:51","slug":"zoning-why-we-cant-congratulate-tambuwal-pdp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/06\/07\/zoning-why-we-cant-congratulate-tambuwal-pdp\/","title":{"rendered":"Zoning: Why we can\u2019t congratulate Tambuwal \u2013 PDP"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"82\">\n<p><strong>By Henry Umoru<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ABUJA \u2013 SHOCKED by the dumping of\u00a0 its zoning formula and the emergence of\u00a0 Aminu Waziri Tambuwal as Speaker at\u00a0 the election of principal officers in the House of Representatives , yesterday, the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has\u00a0 said that\u00a0 it cannot congratulate the newly elected speaker.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Party, it became imperative not to congratulate him because consultations were still on with leaders of the party,\u00a0 National Assembly leaders and other stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Tuesday, by the National Secretary of the PDP, Abubakar Kawu Baraje, the Party noted that , consultation is on course and the party will soon come up with its position.<\/p>\n<p>The statement read, \u2018\u2019the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) notes with great concern the unfolding developments in the House of Representatives especially the outcome of the election of principal officers on Monday, 6th June 2011.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018\u2019While the Party believes in, and indeed encourages the exercise of freedom of choice for all Nigerians including members of the National Assembly, it is important to reiterate that the principle of zoning is still an integral part of the PDP Constitution.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018\u2019The idea of zoning is a well thought-out philosophy for National stability and integration. It is the only guarantee that every segment of Nigeria enjoys a sense of belonging by being represented in all the decision making organs of the government of Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018\u2019Consequently, prior to the election of Principal Officers that took place in the Senate and the House of Representatives on the 6th of June 2011, the NWC in collaboration with other decision making bodies of our Party made spirited efforts to build a consensus around the zoning formula. \u2018\u2019The NWC is currently consulting other organs of the Party to re-assess the entire scenario and will come up with an appropriate policy in due course.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Tambuwal, who hails from Sokoto State, North-West was massively elected as Speaker with 252 votes compared to 90 votes garnered by government and PDP-backed Mulikat Akande-Adeola, who hails from the South-West.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Comments are moderated.
