The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Yaw Owusu Obimpeh has revealed that he received several death threats before the commemoration of the June 4 uprising in Kumasi which compelled him to stay away from the ceremony.<\/p>\n

Dr Obimpeh said the threats contained in text messages from unknown people were sent to him about three days before the event so he decided to pull out of attending the event to ensure his safety.<\/p>\n

He spoke on Dwaso Nsem on Adom FM on Tuesday, June 7. Earlier, Dr Obimpeh had claimed that some personal matters which needed to be addressed urgently made him absent himself from the ceremony held in his own backyard.<\/p>\n

He stated that prior to the celebration the Regional executives of the party issued a statement to its members asking them to attend the celebration since it was being held in the region saying he himself would have gone if it had not been for the threats.<\/p>\n

According to him, since he endorsed President Mills\u2019 candidature for the flag bearer of the NDC, his life has never been the same as some people who do not agree with him continue to do all they can embarrass him.<\/p>\n

He however stated that he would continue to unflinchingly support President Mills\u2019 bid to lead the party no matter the threats he receives.<\/p>\n

Dr Obimpeh however stated that he is in full support of the June 4 movement because there are a lot of lessons Ghanaians can take from it adding the day is worth celebrating.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He also stated that former President Jerry Rawlings is a Ghanaian and he has the right to voice out his opinions on issues in the country but insisted that the former President\u2019s statements will not have any adverse effect on the NDC although some people think contrarily.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He added that though the ex-President leveled lots of accusations against the government, Ghanaians are the best people to judge the prospects of President Mills.<\/p>\n

He stated that he believes President Mills has done tremendously well since the party assumed office in 2009 and is optimistic the NDC will cruise to victory in the 2012 elections.<\/p>\n
