{"id":437341,"date":"2011-06-07T08:04:20","date_gmt":"2011-06-07T08:04:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/06\/07\/al-shabaab-charges-women-with-ululation\/"},"modified":"2011-06-07T08:04:20","modified_gmt":"2011-06-07T08:04:20","slug":"al-shabaab-charges-women-with-ululation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/06\/07\/al-shabaab-charges-women-with-ululation\/","title":{"rendered":"Al-Shabaab Charges Women with Ululation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"35.9224806202\">\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nation.co.ke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/img\/static\/publishers\/minibanners\/nation180.jpg\" alt=\"The Nation (Nairobi)\" title=\"Visit The Nation (Nairobi)\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Abdulkadir Khali<\/p>\n<p>7 June 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>Somalia militants loyal to al-Shabaab, the radical Islamist group strongly opposing the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia have seized some 15 women in Afgoye district in Lower Shabelle region, some 30 kilometres south of Mogadishu.<\/p>\n<p>The women were accused of ululating at a wedding in the country&#8217;s town of Afgoye.<\/p>\n<p>Residents said that the women were taken to a detention centre in the district headquarter and have been charged with public expression of joy, which the fanatical Islamists prohibited.<\/p>\n<p>Ululation is very popular among Somali women, especially among women in the southern and central regions who combine with songs and dances locally known as baraanbur to grace weddings and other celebrations.<\/p>\n<p>Al-Shabaab also apprehended on Monday 10 youth in the so-called Afgoye-Mogadishu corridor, southwest of the Somali capital, where most of those who fled the war in Mogadishu found shelter.<br \/>The youngsters were accused of playing football, which the Islamists prohibited in May.<br \/><strong><br \/>Public flogging<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On 21st of May, an order from al-Shabaab office in Afgoye town ordered the youth to stop playing or watching football. Instead, they were instructed to attend the prayers at mosques and the religious sessions adapted to raise public consciousness on jihad (holy war).<\/p>\n<p>If sentenced, residents in the district assume that the women and the boys may get fine, jail sentences or public disciplining like flogging.<\/p>\n<p>The militants consider many social expressions like games, music and folk dances as incompatible with Islam.
