A LATE Thomas Ulimwengu goal helped the national U-23 soccer team, Vijana Stars, manage a slim 1-0 win over Nigeria in the first leg of the 2012 Olympic Qualifiers’ second round played at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Sunday

Ulimwengu’s goal on 84th minute proved to be a huge relief to the less-impressive Vijana Stars, who struggled to contain their opponents for long spells, as the latter could have bagged a win had they fully exploited the numerous chances they got.

It was a moment that the home side’s fans had to wait patiently as Vijana Stars were almost overwhelmed by the Nigerians. Nigeria, though, will have themselves to blame for failing to secure victory as they wasted a host of close chances they had in either half.

Vijana Stars will further have goalkeeper, Juma Seif, to thank as the lanky shot stopper made a number of crucial saves to keep marauding Nigeria’s strikers at bay.

Both teams, though, started the match cautiously in a bid to avoid costly mistakes and it was the Nigerians, who later looked more intent on registering a goal courtesy of a series of dangerous moves they made.

The two sides struggled to control the ball on a rather slippery pitch particularly during the early exchanges of the first half and that slightly deprived the game of the much anticipated entertainment.

While the home side somewhat managed to orchestrate a couple of attacks in the first half, they were forced into the defensive approach for the better part of the second half as the Nigerians put pressure in search of goals.

After the first half that produced much action in front of Vijana Stars’ goal, Nigeria started the second half forcefully and twice went close only to be denied by the agile Seif.

Nigeria’s burly striker, Dimaku Ochukwu, missed the two glorious chances, in which the first saw Seif parry away the forward’s fierce shot inside the penalty area before the Vijana Stars’ keeper made a diving save to deny the striker’s close header in the second.

Nigeria continued to pile attacks as time ticked by and skipper, Haruna Lukman, could have found Vijana Stars’ back of the net had he properly met Anyanwu Iyke’s dangerous cross from the right flank. The introduction of winger, Khamis Mcha, somehow breathed life into Vijana Stars’ attacking force, which was almost inactive after the Nigerians managed to tight mark Uimwengu.

And it was Mcha, who played major role in the home side’s winner, as he completed his team mates’ neat one-two from almost 40 metres out by whipping in a perfect cross that was met by Ulimwengu’s outstretched right foot to send the crowd into ecstasy.

Vijana Stars’ head coach, Jamhuri Kihwelo, will have plenty to work on technically should his side wish to dispatch the Nigerians in the qualifiers as the home side’s weaknesses almost cost them dearly.

With a slim advantage in their hands, Vijana Stars still have a huge mountain to climb in the return leg match, which will so far be decisive to their attempts to qualify for the 2012 Olympic showdown.
