Yenagoa – Twelve months after an oil spill devastated their farmland, the people of Ikeinghebiri community in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State have again called for proper clean up and remediation of their land.

They also want adequate compensation paid for their losses and hardship occasioned by the spill, which occurred sometimes in April 2010 due to alleged equipment failure from a pipeline belonging to the Nigerian Agip Oil Company.

Lamenting their plight the deputy paramount ruler of the community, Chief Collins Adiokoko, who solicited the assistance of Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria, ERA/FoEN, in their cause for environmental justice, said their means of livelihood had been destroyed.

According to him, the entire swamp, farmlands, individual ponds and community lakes were seriously impacted by the crude oil spill.

“As you know, lakes are not only major sources of water, we do fish in them from time to time. Two of our lakes impacted are the Ogbe Dino and Ogbofu Dino.

“Apart from our fishing waters and farm land that were impacted, our hunters are also suffering the impact as there are no animals within these area, even the snails are dying daily.

“My farm was also affected. These are the problems we are facing as a result of that oil spill and, we had informed Agip, that our means of livelihood has been seriously affected due to the spill. We are demanding that Agip should properly clean-up the impacted environment, remediate same and adequately compensate the community,” he added.
