The chief of Akyem Tafo, Osabarima Adusei Peasah, has offered his support for President J.E.A. Mills’s bid for a second term mandate, underscoring the need for him to continue his good work.<\/p>\n
He said with the numerous development initiatives by the Mills Administration, it was plausible to allow him to serve a second term of office to enable him to complete the good work.<\/p>\n
‘By the end of his eight-year term, the Akyem Abuakwa state would have benefited immensely from the work the President has started,’ the Akyem Tafohene stated.<\/p>\n
Osabarima Adusei made the remark at a durbar organized by the chiefs and people of the area in honour of President Mills as part of his three-day working visit to the Eastern Region.<\/p>\n
He said per the pace of development, especially in the area of education, he foresaw the establishment of a public university in the area should the government stay on for eight years.<\/p>\n
He pledged the support of chiefs and people of the area for the government to ensure the success of development being implemented in the Akyem area.<\/p>\n
He acknowledged that there were challenges currently facing the government but was hopeful that those challenges would be surmounted with time.<\/p>\n
President John Evans Atta Mills gave the assurance that the government would not renege on its promise to ensure an equitable distribution of the country\u2019s natural resources.<\/p>\n
‘Since the development needs of the people are at the heart of the government\u2019s development agenda, we will not discriminate in the distribution of the national cake,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The President also addressed a durbar of chiefs and people of Kyebi at the Abuakwa State College School, where he inspected a six-unit classroom block.<\/p>\n
The President said the government would continue to initiate development projects in every part of the country without any political or ethnic discrimination.<\/p>\n
He, therefore, expressed the hope that the chiefs and people would exercise faith with the government and partner it in bringing meaningful development.<\/p>\n
The Minister of Education, Mrs Betty Mould-Iddrissu, said since education was a blessing and a major cornerstone to the country\u2019s development, the government had devoted 31 per cent of the country\u2019s GDP to the education sector, saying that \u201cthis is one of the highest in the world\u201d.<\/p>\n
She indicated that to ensure effective delivery of quality education, there was the need to decentralise education to take on board all stakeholders, including district assemblies, chiefs and the communities.<\/p>\n
Prior to the durbar, the President also cut the sod for work to begin on the construction of a 25-metre steel bridge on the 8.3 kilometre Akyem Adukrom-Agyapomaa-Asafo feeder road.<\/p>\n
Upon completion, the GH\u00a21 million bridge will facilitate the movement of people and farm produce from the three towns to Kyebi.<\/p>\n
The project will be jointly funded by the government and the Government of Spain and is expected to be completed in August, this year.<\/p>\n
Currently, the inhabitants of the three towns have to travel a distance of 18 kilometres to Kyebi.<\/p>\n
The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa North, Mr Atta Akyea, said the prospect of the bridge was important to his constituency as it would open up the area.<\/p>\n
He expressed delight at the government\u2019s commitment to take up the challenge to execute work on the bridge.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
