FORMER President Jerry John Rawlings has justified his public criticisms of President J.E.A. Mills and his administration, saying that such engagement is not born out of his wife\u2019s political ambition.<\/p>\n
Rather, he explained that he was doing so to \u201cprotect the boat from sinking\u201d because President Mills had failed to protect the sanctity of the principles on which he rode to power.<\/p>\n
Declaring that a President \u201cis nothing\u201d if he failed to adhere to the principles of the party that brought him or her to power, former President Rawlings said there were so many things that needed to be done to consolidate power but any time he drew the President\u2019s attention to them, he turned deaf ears to his pieces of advice.<\/p>\n
Former President Rawlings was speaking at a mammoth rally at the Jubilee Park in Kumasi to climax activities marking the 32nd anniversary of the June 4 Uprising. It was on the theme, \u201cUnity in Diversity, Our Strength\u201d.<\/p>\n
Even though government appointees were encouraged by the national executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to attend the rally, many of them were conspicuously absent.<\/p>\n
However, supporters of the NDC from Kumasi and other parts of the country responded positively.<\/p>\n
Significantly, most of the people who attended the rally were supporters of Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings and they wore T-shirts and carried banners indicating their support for her flagbearership bid.<\/p>\n
Former President Rawlings said one sad mistake he, as President, and the NDC made was the failure to identify enough young people with dedication and integrity to take over the party and the administration of the nation in future.<\/p>\n
He predicted that Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings would emerge winner at the July congress of the NDC in Sunyani.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut even if she does not win, she would have stood out as the one who bore the courage to challenge the rot in the system,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n
In 2008, he noted, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) used huge sums of money, both from within and from outside, to prosecute the election but lost because the NDC stuck to its principle of honesty.<\/p>\n
He accused officials surrounding the President of looting state coffers to make themselves financial giants.<\/p>\n
However, he maintained that if the members of the Mills administration believed that money would be the only factor in determining the winner of the 2012 elections, they would be making a big mistake because they would come nowhere near the NPP who amassed wealth far beyond what was happening today.<\/p>\n
Expressing grave concern over alleged vote buying in the run-up to the July congress, Flt Lt Rawlings said such a practice was uncharacteristic of the NDC.<\/p>\n
The former President, whose 47-minute speech was punctuated with clinching of his fist and punching the air, was occasionally moved by shouts of \u201cmore booms, more booms\u201d from the audience.<\/p>\n
In response, however, he said, \u201cI am going to give a small boom\u201d and the crowd, which had waited patiently for long hours to listen to him, responded with wild applause.<\/p>\n
He said the NDC would lose the 2012 elections if it maintained the status quo and indicated that the time had come for the party members to be bold and ensure that a new leadership took over the party.<\/p>\n
He could not fathom why the Mills administration had failed to successfully prosecute officials of the former regime in the face of the alleged massive corruption they perpetrated.<\/p>\n
He wondered whether the compromise of \u201cI scratch my back and you scratch my back is now the order of the day\u201d.<\/p>\n
