Freetown — The national team Leone Stars has been hit by a triple setback ahead of their 2012 African Cup of Nations qualifier against Niger in Freetown with three first-choice players ruled out due to injuries.

Cyprus-based striker, Mustapha ‘Hadji’ Bangura was the first to be ruled out after his recent car accident along the Bo highway; he was replaced by Norway-based midfielder, Alfred Zagallo Sankoh.

Now with barely four days to go for the Niger clash, Azerbaijan-based midfielder Gibrilla Woobay aka ‘Gibo’ has also been ruled out after suffering a hamstring injury. The attacking midfielder who was one of the invited 17 foreign-based players by the technical team was said to have picked up the injury during his club, Khazar Lankaran’s clash against Inter Baku in the Azerbaijan Cup final, which they won.

Khazar Lankaran’s club doctor has given the player two weeks to fully recover, and he is only a week in his recovery drive.

Another player that will miss the Freetown clash is midfielder Samuel Barlay, also based in Azerbaijan. Unlike the others, Barlay has ruled himself out, saying he’s fighting to regain full fitness from a knee injury he sustained few weeks back for his club, FK Magan.

The former Sierra Leone U-17 captain was expecting to be fit before the Leone Stars clash against the Mena Stars of Niger in Freetown but could not make it as his recovery is going on very slow. The player in an exclusive interview with Concord Sports said he was disappointed to miss the crucial encounter.

“It is my dream to always play for my country, I was expecting to be fit before the match but I couldn’t work my way through and I’m very disappointed to miss out,” Barlay said.

Leone Stars need maximum points against Niger to revive their hopes of qualifying for the 2012 African Nations Cup in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon as they are currently sitting third in Group G with two points from three matches.
