{"id":436589,"date":"2011-06-06T07:52:58","date_gmt":"2011-06-06T07:52:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/06\/06\/senior-agriculture-officials-sensitised-on-disaster-risk-reduction\/"},"modified":"2011-06-06T07:52:58","modified_gmt":"2011-06-06T07:52:58","slug":"senior-agriculture-officials-sensitised-on-disaster-risk-reduction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/06\/06\/senior-agriculture-officials-sensitised-on-disaster-risk-reduction\/","title":{"rendered":"Senior Agriculture Officials Sensitised on Disaster Risk Reduction"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"60.2675552019\">\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.observer.gm\/enews\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Daily Observer<\/a> (Banjul)<\/p>\n<p>Salifu M.touray<\/p>\n<p>2 June 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>Lrr \u2014 The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Banjul office, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture on Friday concluded a two-day sensitisation forum for senior Agriculture officials on disaster preparedness, response and risk reduction, held at the Agricultural Rural Farmers Training Centre in Jenoi, Lower River Region (LRR).<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of the training is to build the capacities of stakeholders in order to address some pertinent issues relating to disaster risk reduction and management, as well as to avert the occurrence of disasters in the country.<\/p>\n<p>In his opening remarks, Asheme Cole, deputy permanent secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture, underscored the significance of the sensitisation. He said agriculture, being the back bone of the country&#8217;s economy, has a key role to play on disaster risk reduction. He explained that for disaster occurrence to be addressed, it needs not only the attention of the government but also the attention of donor agencies, merchants and individuals to prepare and respond to disasters. He then urged the participants to take the training seriously and disseminate the information gained in the training to their colleagues who could not be part of the training.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Babagana Ahmadu, the FAO representative in The Gambia, informed that the organisation has developed early warning systems for emergencies since in the mid 1970s. He said these systems are meant to manage global information services for various purposes, as well as plant and animal health emergencies. He noted that FAO helps both local government organisations and communities to be better prepared in responding to sudden and slow onset disasters.<\/p>\n<p>He went further to reveal that shortly after The Gambia Government made an international appeal in support of the 2010 flood victims, the Ministry of Agriculture requested the assistance of the FAO for technical and financial support to participate in a multi-sector rapid joint-assessment , organised by the UN system in order to determine the needs of people affected by the floods . He finally reiterated his organisation&#8217;s continuous commitment to supporting the Ministry of Agriculture and the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA).<\/p>\n<p>For his part, Dr. Sait Drammeh, the director general of Agriculture, thanked the FAO Banjul office and other UN agencies in the country for their support to the farming community of The Gambia. Essa Khan, the executive director of the NDMA, spoke at length on the significance of the training, describing it as timely. He went on to emphasize the need for partnership, noting that disaster is a cross-cutting issue which needs collective collaboration from all stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p>Wally Sanneh, the deputy governor of the Lower River Region, in his remarks, commended The Gambia Government for establishing the NDMA, saying the initiative is timely and relevant. He also hailed the efforts of the NDMA, through its governing council, for establishing regional offices and committees across the country.
