TUESDAY, MAY 24

Back in Britain for a few days, and interviewed two former world leaders this afternoon – Gordon Brown and ex-Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf.

Because of Barack Obama’s state visit, London traffic was at a standstill, so Gordon ran a bit late.

When he turned up, he looked breathless.

Interviewing former world leaders: Gordon Brown (left) looked breathless and ex-Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf (right) was fascinating

‘You OK?’ I asked.

‘Yes, yes, fine. I just had to walk the last mile – and all to see you, Piers!’

Ah, the indignities of life after high office…

Gordon’s name is in the frame for the vacant IMF job after the extraordinary downfall of Dominique Strauss-Kahn – the man accused of sexually attacking a chambermaid.

‘I was staying in a New York hotel room that same day,’ Gordon said, raising an eyebrow.

‘But that’s as far as the coincidences go!’

Musharraf was fascinating – branding the killing of Osama Bin Laden ‘a technical act of war’ and accusing Obama of ‘arrogance’ for not informing Pakistani officials of what he was planning.

But, as I pointed out, how could Obama trust the Pakistani government given they’d had the world’s most wanted terrorist living in their midst for five years?

THURSDAY, MAY 26

Appeared on the Tonight Show this evening, America’s most famous chat show, and had a coffee with legendary host Jay Leno backstage in my dressing room. I asked him what he’d learnt from 40 years in showbusiness.

‘That there are two types of people in the world,’ he chuckled.

"I

I appeared on the Tonight Show and endured one of those moments you’d really rather avoid on national television

‘Those who, when it’s cold in a room, say politely, “Hey, it’s a bit chilly in here, isn’t it?” And those who scream, “Someone shut the f****** window!”’

Later, during the show itself, I endured one of those moments you’d really rather avoid on national television.

A young lady called Lauren Alaina, who’d just come second on the latest series of American Idol, came out to join me on the sofa. And when I congratulated her, and added that I thought she should have won, she suddenly stopped talking, turned slowly back to me, and with great comic timing, scoffed: ‘Oh DO you now? Well in that case why did I get rejected from the last series of America’s Got Talent?’

The audience roared with laughter as I squirmed for England.

‘In fact,’ she added, ‘I auditioned the year before, and got rejected that time too!’

By this time even Jay was falling about laughing. Struggling to retain my composure amid the shocking revelation that we’d slung away one of the best young singers in America, I eventually stumbled out: ‘Well, it just goes to show how much better the standard is on America’s Got Talent, doesn’t it?’

I sped from the Tonight Show down to CNN’s bureau a few miles away on Sunset Boulevard, where Paris Hilton was waiting for me, for a very rare interview with her mother Kathy.

I was expecting a light-hearted romp through Paris’s comparatively trivial celebrity life. But it turned into one of the most emotional and dramatic interviews I’ve done yet for CNN.

The catalyst came when I brought up the subject of the infamous sex tape that catapulted Paris into global stardom.

When I asked Kathy what the tape had done to her family, she suddenly broke down and wept uncontrollably.

‘It was the most awful thing that’s ever happened to us,’ she sobbed.

As Paris tried to comfort her, Kathy’s tears became so intense that I had to actually stop filming and ask for an aide to bring her some tissues.

‘The worst thing,’ she said, ‘is that the internet means it will always be there, so Paris’s children, my grandchildren, will be able to see it one day. And there’s nothing we can do to stop it.’

And that, surely, is the terrible truth about the double-edged sword of the world wide web.

Yes, it can turn ordinary, talentless individuals into massive celebrities (Paris has ten times as many hits on Google as Nelson Mandela, a fact she readily admits is ‘ridiculous’) but it can also devastate reputations forever with a never-ending, relentless power that no newspaper or TV programme could ever have.

Tap ‘Paris Hilton sex tape’ into Google and you’ll quickly see why Kathy Hilton is so distraught. It’s every mother’s nightmare.

"Cheryl

Cheryl Cole’s obviously pretty bruised by the whole experience

MONDAY, MAY 30

I watched the first ten minutes of Britain’s Got Talent from LA tonight (I watch UK television using a Slingbox, a quite amazing invention), purely to see how Simon Cowell would mark his comeback to the show.

He didn’t disappoint – appearing on stage after the other three judges, in a flash of dazzling light, to the Superman theme tune.

A charming vignette that could only have been improved by the arrival of Cheryl Cole clutching a bar of Kryptonite.

Talking of Cheryl, I feel desperately sorry for her over the whole disastrous American X Factor affair.

TV can be a brutal business, especially in the States. We exchanged a few texts tonight and she’s obviously pretty bruised by the whole experience. But she’ll be back. Cheryl’s a survivor.

TUESDAY, MAY 31

The weirdest day of my TV career so far.

The sixth series of America’s Got Talent started up tonight on NBC, airing at exactly the same time as my CNN show (with the Hiltons) went out.

This will be the case, twice a week, for the next four months. So I will, quite literally, be competing with myself.

In an effort to bring the two very different shows together, I dedicated my CNN programme to AGT last night, interviewing host Nick Cannon, and then previous winners Terry Fator and Michael Grimm.

More from Piers Morgan…

Mr Cannon is, of course, married to Mariah Carey, who recently gave birth to twins.

‘I like your wife,’ I told him.

‘I know you do!’ he cracked back.

‘You’re always being overly flirtatious with her.’

‘I think you’ll find she’s the one flirting with me,’ I countered.

At which point, his eyes narrowed and he said: ‘In my neighbourhood, we have ways of dealing with people like you.’

Pause. ‘Not very nice ways!’

I then asked him: ‘Do you wake up some mornings and think, “Blimey, I’m lying next to Mariah Carey?”’

He laughed: ‘I do! I was her biggest fan before I met her. And I still am. Marrying her was like a dream come true for me.’

A sentiment shared by Terry, a ventriloquist who landed an astonishing $100 million contract in Vegas after his AGT triumph – making him the most successful break-out star from any talent show ever.

‘You having fun?’ I asked.

Terry flashed a smile so big it could have easily illuminated the Las Vegas Strip on its own.

‘More fun than you could possibly imagine!’
