{"id":435995,"date":"2011-06-04T19:36:45","date_gmt":"2011-06-04T19:36:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/06\/04\/hivaids-activists-to-source-own-funds\/"},"modified":"2011-06-04T19:36:45","modified_gmt":"2011-06-04T19:36:45","slug":"hivaids-activists-to-source-own-funds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/06\/04\/hivaids-activists-to-source-own-funds\/","title":{"rendered":"HIV\/Aids Activists to Source Own Funds"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"44.2715582451\">\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.monitor.co.ug\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/img\/static\/publishers\/minibanners\/monitor180.jpg\" alt=\"The Monitor (Kampala)\" title=\"Visit The Monitor (Kampala)\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Joseph Miti<\/p>\n<p>4 June 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>HIV\/Aids activists have started a strategy through which organisations would source their own funds to sustain their activities in a move to reduce over reliance on donor funding.<\/p>\n<p>Under their umbrella body, Civil Society Fund (CSF), the activists said the current economic climate calls for innovative strategies to diversify their funding strategy and effectively implement universal access to effective treatment, care and prevention.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The current economic climate and the trend in the epidemic requires new strategies to address future financial self-sustainability,&#8221; Dr Joel Okullo, the CSF chairman, said during a roundtable fundraising discussion held in Kampala on June 2.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the country records more than 130,000 new infections every year and scientists warn that without an effective control method, these numbers are expected to rise further in coming years.<\/p>\n<p>The development, however, comes at a moment when Uganda is conducting two new HIV\/Aids vaccine trials as part of ongoing efforts to find a cure for the deadly disease.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Okullo said the new strategy would also assist in coordinating and harmonising the use of long term funding with the involvement of government, civil society and the private sector.<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8220;New sources of funding need to be identified urgently and potential donors beyond traditional boundaries should be approached to increase efficiency.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dr Okullo said CSF will invite key investors and private business practitioners, among other traditional donors to put their resources to health-driven projects as opposed to just making profits.<\/p>\n<p>CSF is a unique multi-donor funded initiative which seeks to provide grants to civil society organisation (CSOs) in support of activities scaling up effective and comprehensive responses to HIV\/Aids.<\/p>\n<p>It is currently funded by five Aids development partners including, United States Agency for International Development, Department for International Development and Irish Aid.
