The industrial and allied companies was the most preferred sector at the stock exchange with Sh56 billion put in stocks followed by finance and investment segment, which had Sh55 billion invested.

Mr Odundo said the number of pensioners under National Social Security Fund were two million but active members could be less. Those under individual schemes were 350,000, while 300,000 were under civil service schemes, which are not regulated by RBA. “Of the estimated 15 million employed persons, we have 16 per cent coverage and that is why we are conducting financial literacy to increase this number,” he said.

The authority partnered with Jua Kali Association, an umbrella bodies of workers in the informal sector to increase inclusion. Mr Odundo said the collaboration had brought in 17,000 new members and were also working closely with the Matatu Owners Association.

To ensure improved take up of pension schemes RBA has initiated payment of contributions using mobile phone technology.

Mr Odundo further said that they were working on a concept paper to include Kenyans abroad who usually tend to secure their old age by sending money for investment but which sometimes is squandered by trusted relatives. “Persons in the diaspora approached RBA and sought to have a product developed for them since they are home bound and they would like some form of security when they get here” said Mr Odundo.

While the diaspora market was showing interest, most professionals in the private sector kept away from retirement schemes opting to put their money in real estate or plough back the profits.

“When under financial strain it is easy to hold such assets and sell off and with the lump sum one is likely to spend it all” said Mr Odundo. “A lot of them feel they will not retire and will be in the business for life but this is not the case and we wish to encourage them to join individual schemes.”

<fieldset>
<legend align="center">More News on allAfrica.com</legend>
</fieldset>

AllAfrica – All the Time

Read More:
Pension Returns Beat Inflation Rate

Business Daily (Nairobi) George Ngigi 2 June 2011 Workers’ retirement savings earned an average return of 27.8 per cent last year, beating the inflation rate for the first time in three years.
