{"id":435822,"date":"2011-06-04T10:11:40","date_gmt":"2011-06-04T10:11:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/06\/04\/president-calls-for-more-reforestation\/"},"modified":"2011-06-04T10:11:40","modified_gmt":"2011-06-04T10:11:40","slug":"president-calls-for-more-reforestation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/06\/04\/president-calls-for-more-reforestation\/","title":{"rendered":"President Calls for More Reforestation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"62.2818610924\">\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.poptel.org.uk\/mozambique-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/img\/static\/publishers\/minibanners\/aim180.jpg\" alt=\"Agencia de Informacao de Mocambique (Maputo)\" title=\"Visit Agencia de Informacao de Mocambique (Maputo)\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>2 June 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>Maputo \u2014 Mozambican President Armando Guebuza on Wednesday called for greater involvement of all Mozambicans in reforestation and tree planting programmes, in order to mitigate the effects of environmental degradation.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a rally in the Imala administrative post, in Muecate district, in the northern province of Nampula, Guebuza stressed that forests and trees help to purify the air and create conditions for a better and healthier life.<\/p>\n<p>Trees also help in the formation of clouds, and thus indirectly provide the rainfall which Mozambicans need to increase their agricultural production.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need the rains to swell our rivers and fill our cisterns&#8221;, said Guebuza. &#8220;So we are asking each of you to do more in planting trees and in reforestation to attract more rain. The climate has changed. Sometimes it doesn&#8217;t rain, and at other times it rains too much, because people are destroying the trees and, as a result, the environment in which they live&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He said this was why the government had launched the campaigns &#8220;Each Pupil One Tree Per Year&#8221;, and &#8220;Each Community Leader, One Forest&#8221;, in order to try to block the environmental degradation that is damaging food production.<\/p>\n<p>Guebuza also called for the rational use of the available resources, stressing that the country&#8217;s forests, rivers, mountains and land are resources that Mozambicans must preserve so that they can serve future generations.<\/p>\n<p>Mozambicans must work to preserve their environment, he insisted, &#8220;because it is very easy to destroy, but very difficult and time-consuming to build&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We cannot use our intelligence to destroy what we have built&#8221;, Guebuza said. &#8220;We have to use it to go on building. For this, we need peace and we must prioritise dialogue for solving any problems which may arise&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The President declared that the fight against poverty is a struggle that all should wage, and they should do so every day. &#8220;Even those who were in the military base (a reference to fighters of the former rebel movement Renamo) and those who were in the village, must produce in unity, because we are all brothers&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>As in the districts of Murrupula and Ribaue, which Guebuza visited earlier in his tour of Nampula, residents on Imala, when called on to address the rally, urged the government to build more schools, hospitals, water sources, and mobile phone masts. Thy wanted an ambulance allocated to their district &#8211; and called for industries such as a sawmill and a cashew processing plant to be established at Imala.
