UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has stressed the need to build a just and equitable world through the provision of equal assistance to social, economic and environmental for sustainable development.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will not build a just and equitable world unless we give equal weight to all three pillars of sustainable development \u2013 social, economic and environmental.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTo sustainably reduce poverty, guarantee food and nutrition security and provide decent employment for growing populations, we must make the most intelligent use of our natural capital,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Ban made the call in a message to celebrate World Environment Day on Sunday, June 5.<\/p>\n

The theme for this year\u2019s World Environment Day is \u201cForests: Nature at
Your<\/p>\n

Service\u201d, to emphasises the multi-trillion dollar value of these and other ecosystems to society \u2013 especially the poor.<\/p>\n

A statement issued by the United Nations Information Centre in Accra on Friday said \u201cNearly 20 years after the 1992 Earth Summit, the world is once again on the road to Rio \u2013 the site of the June 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMuch has changed in the past two decades, geopolitically and environmentally. Hundreds of millions of people in Asia, Latin America \u2013 and, increasingly, in Africa \u2013have risen from poverty.\u00a0 Yet, evidence is also accumulating of profound and potentially irreversible changes in the ability of the planet to sustain our progress.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRapid economic growth has come with costs that traditionally rarely feature in national accounting.\u00a0 These range from atmospheric and water pollution to degraded fisheries and forests, all of which impact prosperity and human well-being,\u201d Ban said.<\/p>\n

\u201cDespite growing global awareness of the dangers of environmental decline -including climate change, biodiversity loss and desertification \u2013 progress since the Earth Summit has been too slow.\u00a0 We will not build a just and equitable world unless we give equal weight to all three pillars of sustainable development \u2013 social, economic and environmental.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTo sustainably reduce poverty, guarantee food and nutrition security and provide decent employment for growing populations, we must make the most intelligent use of our natural capital,\u201d Ban added.<\/p>\n

Ban said \u201cIndia, the global host of World Environment Day in 2011, is among a growing number of countries working to address the pressures of ecological change.<\/p>\n

It is also helping to pioneer a better assessment of the economic value of nature-based services, with the assistance of the United Nations Environment Programme and the World Bank.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIndia\u2019s Rural Employment Act and the country\u2019s encouragement of renewable energy are significant examples of how to scale up green growth and accelerate the transition to a green economy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo single day can transform development onto a sustainable path.\u00a0 But on the road to Rio +20, this year\u2019s World Environment Day can send a message that those with influence in government and the private sector can \u2013 and must \u2013 take the necessary steps that will fulfil the promise of the Earth Summit.\u00a0 The global public is watching, and expects nothing less,\u201d Ban said.<\/p>\n
