An Abuja Magistrate\u2019s Court yesterday sentenced a 24-year-old traditional medicine seller to two months\u2019 imprisonment for stealing a polythene bag containing money, belonging to one Fatima Musa of Lugbe village.<\/p>\n
Zaiyanu Idris of Sauka village was however given an option of a fine of N1,000 with stern warnings to stop stealing.<\/p>\n
The accused was convicted for theft, an offence punishable under Section 288 of the Penal Code.<\/p>\n
Police prosecutor, Paul Anigbo, told the court that while the complainant was selling food at Lube Primary School, the accused who was also selling his wares nearby, stole her polythene bag containing money on May 30.<\/p>\n
He said the bag contained N7,000, clothes valued at N2,000 and a Nokia handset.<\/p>\n
\u201cDuring police investigation, the accused confessed to the crime and the stolen handset and clothes were recovered,\u2019\u2019 the prosecutor stated.<\/p>\n
When the charge was read to the accused, he pleaded guilty and begged for leniency, while the prosecutor asked for summary trial.<\/p>\n
Magistrate Bashar Attairu Alkali convicted him and warned him against committing such crime in future.<\/p>\n
In another case, a 26-year-old business man has been sentenced to one month imprisonment for trespassing into a house belonging to one Ade Adewale with intent to commit a crime.<\/p>\n
Ojo Abdusalam of Piwoyi was convicted for criminal trespass, an offence punishable under Section 348 of the Penal Code.<\/p>\n
Police prosecutor, Inspector Jeremiah Elija, told the court that on May 20, the complainant reported at Lugbe Police Station that the accused was caught in their house with intent to commit an offence.<\/p>\n
He said when the accused was questioned, he was unable to give satisfactory account of himself.<\/p>\n
When the charge was read to the accused, he pleaded guilty and begged for leniency, while the prosecutor asked for a hearing date.<\/p>\n
Magistrate Rosemary Kanyip sentenced the accused to one month imprisonment or to pay N500 as fine.<\/p>\n
