The Mauritanian president, His Excellency Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz arrived in the country Monday evening with a high-powered delegation for a four-day state visit; a move many believe will further consolidate and strengthen the ties existing between the two countries, that has a history of close relations.

In the Gambian leader’s view, the relationship between the two countries and their peoples is now ‘one of blood’. He said: “There are blood relations – there are a lot of Mauritanians married to Gambians and there are a lot of Gambians married to Mauritanians as well. So we are a family as is opposed to when it is purely a diplomatic visit. He [President Aziz] is visiting his second home [The Gambia].”

President Jammeh maintained that The Gambia and Mauritania have always had excellent relations, emphasising that the two have always been working together. The visit by President Aziz, the Gambian leader continued, is a regular visit of consultations that they normally have between the two countries on how to further strengthen the excellent relations that bind them. “So he [President Aziz] is not a visitor here – he is at his second home just like when I go to Mauritania, Gambians see that country as their second home. So we are here to further strengthen the very excellent relations that we have between the two countries,” he stated. The Gambian leader added that Banjul and Nouakchott are always looking at ways and means to make the relationship better and deeper.

Also speaking briefly to journalists in an interview, President Aziz harped on the bilateral relationship between the two countries, which he acknowledged is longstanding. The Mauritanian president equally pointed out that Banjul and Nouakchott are working towards improving and diversifying the existing relationship for the interest of the two countries and their peoples.

While hinting that his closed-door discussion with President Jammeh also touched on issues affecting the continent, especially the region, President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz concluded that the visit would avail them the opportunity to further strengthen the bond of relationship that binds the two countries and their peoples.

<fieldset>
<legend align="center">More News on allAfrica.com</legend>
</fieldset>

AllAfrica – All the Time

View original post here:
President Jammeh Extols Ties With Mauritania Says It’s More of a Blood Relationship

The Daily Observer (Banjul) Hatab Fadera 1 June 2011 The Gambian leader has extolled the longstanding ties existing between The Gambia and the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, saying it has gone beyond political, and is now more of a blood and family relationship.
