He said studies had shown that billions of dollars would be required for the country to build up adequate energy infrastructure to move the economy forward.

Prof Nyarko was speaking at a day’s seminar on Sustainable Energy Development organised by the Energy Commission and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Accra on Thursday.

He said the Commission, Volta River Authority together with other national institutions had been undertaking technical co-operation projects to enhance the energy sector.

The project was aimed at developing long-term comprehensive energy supply plan for the country using IAEA computer- based tools.

He noted that the project is expected to help in the capacity building of expertise in the energy planning of the country.

Prof Nyarko said the IAEA project on energy planning has helped the country’s energy planners in formulating strategies for the development of sustainable energy mix for the nation.

Dr Ofosu Ahenkorah, Executive Secretary of the Energy Commission said his outfit is mandated to collect and analyse data to meet the energy demands of the country.

He said the Commission is also responsible for energy regulation and a policy adviser to the Ministry of Energy.

Dr Ahenkorah said the Commission has been given an additional task to manage and utilise the energy resources in the country and to study and implement the renewable energy law.
