AFTER EMBARRASSING themselves for raiding Opera Square in Accra to collect 13,000 CDs of the new Ghanaian movies with the title \u2018Atta Mortuary Man\u2019, operatives of the National Security have compelled producers of the movie to render an unqualified apology to the Ministry of Information and the government for the choice of the title.<\/p>\n
The new movie was supposed to be on the market on Monday but last Saturday, operatives of the National Security stormed the shop of George Walker, popularly called \u2018Nyankonton\u2019, who is the main distributor of the film and collected all the CDs of the movie and the posters.<\/p>\n
The reason for the seizure of the CDs, as explained by a Deputy Minister of Information, Baba Jamal, was that the film needed to be properly censored but the reason for their bullying tactics soon changed to \u2018non-payment of taxes\u2019 and non-registration of company.<\/p>\n
Many Ghanaians condemned the action of the National Security operatives.<\/p>\n
In a statement signed by Philip Gborku and Eric Asante, executive producer and producer respectively of \u2018Atta Mortuary Man\u2019, the production company, Tiger Heart, said the producer and executive producer wished to render an unqualified apology to the Ministry of Information, the government and any person or institution who might have been offended or embarrassed by the title of the movie, \u2018Atta Mortuary Man\u2019.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe wish to state that such a thing will never happen again,\u201d the statement said, adding that \u201cno ill-will or malice was intended by the title of the movie\u201d.<\/p>\n
The production company therefore asked for forgiveness since to err is human. It is however not clear how they erred with the title except that they made reference to the name \u2018Atta\u2019, which is the middle name of President John Evans Atta Mills.<\/p>\n
Reliable sources said the producers were \u2018bullied\u2019 by the security operatives to take that line of action in order to vindicate them.
Being businessmen, they were afraid their business could be jeopardised but it could not be established whether they were asked to change the title of the film.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the producers are anxious for the return of the 13000 CDs which is still in the custody of the security agencies.<\/p>\n
It would be recalled that a policeman in Zimbabwe was jailed recently for using the toilet of Robert Mugabe, and it is feared Ghana may be getting into similar areas of dictatorship.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
