{"id":434240,"date":"2011-06-01T14:38:46","date_gmt":"2011-06-01T14:38:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/06\/01\/most-children-have-no-pre-school-education\/"},"modified":"2011-06-01T14:38:46","modified_gmt":"2011-06-01T14:38:46","slug":"most-children-have-no-pre-school-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/06\/01\/most-children-have-no-pre-school-education\/","title":{"rendered":"Most Children Have No Pre-School Education"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"37.2966909703\">\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.poptel.org.uk\/mozambique-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/img\/static\/publishers\/minibanners\/aim180.jpg\" alt=\"Agencia de Informacao de Mocambique (Maputo)\" title=\"Visit Agencia de Informacao de Mocambique (Maputo)\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>31 May 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>Maputo \u2014 Poor school performance in Mozambique may be due in large measure to the fact that most Mozambican children have had no access to pre-school education.<\/p>\n<p>According to statistics quoted on Monday by Education Minister Zeferino Martins, only four per cent of children aged five and under have had access to cr\u00e8ches or other forms of pre-school education.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We all know how important it is for children to go through pre-school education before they enter primary school&#8221;, said Martins, &#8220;since it is in the pre-school institutions that children acquire the assumptions necessary for learning&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He was speaking to a group of 40 children from to Maputo cr\u00e8ches, who visited him as part of the celebrations of International Children&#8217;s Day, 1 June.<\/p>\n<p>Martins stressed that they children who visited him were from a fortunate minority, since the great majority of their peers are quite unable to attend pre-school education.<\/p>\n<p>Pre-school education does not yet form part of the National Education System. Creches, mostly privately owned, exist in the cities &#8211; but the cost of sending a child there puts them out of reach of most parents.
