The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has handed over a 76-year-old ex-military officer, Major Agbeko Sedziafa John Kwame, to the Bureau of the National Investigations (BNI) for further interrogation over the cache of weapons recently found buried in the ground at Akweteyman, a suburb of Accra.<\/p>\n
The Greater Accra Regional Crime Officer, Supt. Emmanuel Adu Fati, told The Chronicle on Tuesday that his outfit had already interrogated the ex-military officer, at whose frontage the weapons were discovered, but he denied any knowledge of it.<\/p>\n
According to Adu Fati, though the CID had already interrogated the suspect, it became necessary to hand him over the BNI to also carry further investigations into the case.<\/p>\n
He could, however, not tell whether the 76 year old ex-military man is still in BNI custody, or has been granted bail, pending investigations.<\/p>\n
On Friday May 20th this year, workers of a construction firm digging a trench at Akweteyman, off the George Walker Bush Jnr. Highway, discovered weapons like shotguns and pistols among others, which had ostensibly been buried in the ground.<\/p>\n
A report was subsequently made to the Police, who came to the scene to conduct a further search, which led to the discovery of more buried weapons.<\/p>\n
Major Sedziafa (Rtd) was invited for interrogation by the regional crime office.<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Information later issued a press statement confirming the discovery of the weapons, but said they were light weapons which might have been buried there in the late 1970s.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
