The Minister of Defense, Lt Gen J.H Smith (Rtd) has asked United Nations (UN) Peacekeepers to perform a wide range of multi-dimensional tasks during operations.<\/p>\n
The tasks include building sustainable institutions of governance, supporting peace processes, reforming security sectors, establishing the rule of law, demobilization and re-integration of former combatants, protection of civilians and combating sexual and gender-based violence.<\/p>\n
The rest are assisting national elections, promoting the security of UN Staff, helping to nurture the often fragile seeds of peace, protecting and promoting human rights and assisting in the restoration of the rule of law<\/p>\n
He made these revelations at the flag-raising and wreath- laying ceremony to commemorate the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers in Accra.<\/p>\n
‘On this day we remember the gallant men and women who served in UN’s peacekeeping operations around the world, and also honour the memory of those who lost their lives in the cause of ensuring international peace and security,’ he added.<\/p>\n
The celebration was themed, ‘Peacekeeping within the Rule of Law: The Challenge of the Ghanaian Peacekeeper.’<\/p>\n
According to him, United Nations Peacekeeping Operations (UNPO) was initially developed as a means of resolving conflicts between states by deploying unarmed or lightly armed military personnel under the UN command to areas where warring factions demanded a neutral party to observe the peace process.<\/p>\n
‘Most of our peacekeeping officers have distinguished themselves creditably in various positions of high responsibility in several peacekeeping missions. It is gratifying to say that most of them have received accolades and thus bringing honour and glory to our dear motherland’ he added.<\/p>\n
He disclosed that the country’s participation in UN peacekeeping operations was based on its constitutional commitment to upholding rule of law, promoting respect for international law and the settlement of international disputes by peaceful means.<\/p>\n
According to him, it’s believed that the country’s contributions to peacekeeping operations demonstrates the country’s commitment to sustaining peace, security and stability in the world.<\/p>\n
Ghana’s active participation in UN operations, which is widely acclaimed, dates back to 1961 when it troops were part of the deployment of peacekeepers.<\/p>\n
He hinted that the end of the Cold War precipitated a dramatic shift in UN and multilateral peacekeeping. \u00a0Peacekeeping became larger and more complex, and often involved implementing comprehensive peace agreements between protagonists in intra-state conflicts and civil wars.<\/p>\n
He explained that peacekeepers will be deployed in inhospitable environments that are sometimes remote and dangerous and poses considerable challenges to peacekeepers and its missions.<\/p>\n
Ban KI-Moon, UN Secretary General, in a speech read on his behalf, said in April seven personnel were murdered in an attack on a UN compound in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n
He further stated that just a few days later, 32 peopel, many of them UN staff, lost their lives in the plane crash in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.<\/p>\n
‘As we remember the heavy sacrifices of our outfit, we also hail their accomplishments, from supporting the Southern Sudan referendum to helping resolve the post-electoral crisis in Cote d’Ivoire,’ he added.<\/p>\n
He noted that the deployment of peace-keepers is a manifestation of its collective conviction that people who have survived wars should not suffer again as a result of insecurity, injustice and fear, stressing that removing these conditions can engender lasting peace.<\/p>\n
He praised countries that have contributed troops, police and civilian personnel to its operations and commended individuals who served the UN with distinction and dedication.<\/p>\n
