Nairobi \u2014 Friends and relatives of marathon champion Samuel Wanjiru have resisted a move by his mother to have funeral committee chairman Ndegwa Wahome step down.<\/p>\n

Ms Hannah Wanjiru had asked Mr Wahome, a lawyer, to disqualify himself from chairing the committee on grounds that he represents the interests of her daughter-in-law Terezah Njeri.<\/p>\n

In separate interviews with Nation, members of the committee said Mr Wahome was unanimously elected chairman during the first meeting by Nyahururu residents and other friends of the late Wanjiru.<\/p>\n

The committee members include fellow athletes and Wanjiru’s relatives.<\/p>\n

According to Hannah, the chairman cannot be fair since he represented her late son and his wife in several legal matters pertaining to acquisition of some of their property.<\/p>\n

She has moved to court to stop the burial until investigations establish her son’s cause of death.<\/p>\n

Pathologists to visit home<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the same time, the three pathologists who performed the postmortem on Wanjiru’s body at Lee Funeral Home, Nairobi, will on Wednesday visit the athlete’s palatial home in Nyahururu to view the scene of the fall said to have resulted to his death.<\/p>\n

The pathologists last week concluded that Wanjiru died from head injuries caused by a blunt force. They are expected to give their final report on the runner’s cause of death after the visit.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, family spokesman Mwihia Kamau said there was a proposal that Nyahururu businessman Anthony Wagura be picked to chair the committee.<\/p>\n

But Mr Wagura declined, saying the committee members had confidence in Mr Wahome and were only interested in giving the fallen marathon star a grand burial.<\/p>\n
