He was received at the foot of the aircraft by his Gambian counterpart, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya AJJ Jammeh.

Among other prominent personalities present to receive the Mauritanian leader and delegation were the Gambian vice president and minister of Women’s Affairs, Her Excellency Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy; the speaker of the National Assembly, Honourable Abdoulie Bojang; the chief justice, Emmanuel Agim; ministers, National Assembly members, senior government officials, religious leaders, members of the diplomatic community, managing directors, a large section of the Gambian populace and members of the Mauritanian community resident in The Gambia.

Dressed in black suit, the Mauritanian head of state went on to inspect a guard of honour mounted by personnel of the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) shortly after disembarking from the plane. He was also treated to a display of cultural and musical performances by the Gambia’s Kora maestro, Jaliba Kuyateh and other cultural troupes. Shortly after the usual airport ceremony, the two leaders headed to the Coco Ocean Hotel in Bijilo where the visiting head of state was installed.

Thousands of people including school children, Gambians and Mauritanians residing in the country, lined the highway right from the gate of the Airport to the Coco Ocean Hotel in Bijilo, to give a most befitting welcome to President Aziz and delegation. This is a traditional welcome by Gambians to showcase their hospitality and appreciation of a foreign head of state. The country has a reputation for giving rare and memorable treats to important visitors especially heads of state.

The two leaders are expected to have a tête-à-tête today Tuesday at State House in Banjul before a joint communiqué will be issued. The visiting head of state is also expected to visit the Gambia Ports Authority and the Tanji Fishing Project today [Tuesday]. As part of the programme of activities, he is also expected to visit the Kafuta Agricultural Project in Kombo East, West Coast Region tomorrow [Wednesday] before proceeding later in the day to the Gambian leader’s home village of Kanilai.

Historical ties

The Gambia and the Islamic Republic of Mauritania have longstanding bilateral ties dating back to many years. The Gambia hosts thousands of Mauritanians who are enjoying the peaceful and conducive atmosphere created by the government of President Jammeh. Mauritanian citizens are today actively engaged in The Gambia’s economic sector, and are present in almost every community in the country. They are also noted for their law-abiding nature. Research indicates that their relationship with the people of The Gambia dates back to the pre-colonial era when there were trade links between the two peoples. The visit of President Aziz would no doubt consolidate the existing bond of friendship and relationship that binds the two governments and their peoples.

Profile

General Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, born 20 December 1956, is a Mauritanian politician, currently serving as President of Mauritania. A career soldier and high-ranking officer, he was a leading figure in the August 2005 coup that deposed President Maaouya Ould Sid’Ahmed Taya, and in August 2008 he led another coup, that toppled President Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi. Following the latter coup, Abdel Aziz became President of the High Council of State as part of what was described as a political transition leading to a new election. He resigned from that post in April 2009 in order to stand as a candidate in the July 2009 presidential election, which he won. He was sworn in on 5 August 2009.

State Banquet

Meanwhile, later in the evening on Tuesday, President Jammeh hosted a State Banquee in honour of the visiting Mauritanian head of state at the Kairaba Beach Hotel in Kololi. The dinner was attended by the vice presidenrt and minister of Women’s Affairs, Her Excellency Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy, the speaker of the National Assembly, the Chief Justice, Cabinet ministers, diplomats and a cross section of Gambian and Mauritamnian communities.

The dinner was spiced up by musical and cultural performances by various troupes.

<fieldset>
<legend align="center">More News on allAfrica.com</legend>
</fieldset>

AllAfrica –
