The Nigerian Guild of Editors, NGE,\u00a0 has described the assent to the Freedom of Information, FoI bill,\u00a0 by President Goodluck Jonathan, as\u00a0 a fulfillment of his\u00a0 commitment to openness, transparency, accountability and good governance.<\/p>\n

In a statement by the President of the Guild, Mr. Gbenga Adefaye, the Guild said that the signing of the FoI Bill into law has expanded the frontiers of press freedom for Africa\u2019s most vibrant press.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201d The Nigerian Guild of Editors, NGE,\u00a0 has received the news of the assent of President Goodluck Jonathan to the Freedom of Information (FOI)\u00a0 bill with gratitude to a president who has kept\u00a0 his words.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Jonathan had, during the last Presidential debate,\u00a0 made a pubic commitment to sign the FoI bill into law once presented to him by the National Assembly\u00a0 as a personal\u00a0 commitment to openness, transparency, accountability and good governance. President Jonathan has really started well with this sign-post for good governance.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBy signing the FoI bill into law, the President has more than anyone else empowered the citizens\u00a0 to participate in the governance of their own affairs. The people\u00a0 can now\u00a0 legitimately seek public information, corroborate their facts and make\u00a0 useful suggestions towards achieving greater good for the majority. With access to information, citizens can fight corruption and closet government and confront the few who misappropriate our resources\u00a0 to themselves alone\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the media, the signing of the FoI law has expanded the frontiers of press freedom for Africa\u2019s most vibrant press. No more\u00a0 will it be permitted for the journalists to hurry to press with half truth and misinformation when they can officially verify their facts.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile the NGE congratulates\u00a0 every Nigerian for this all important citizen\u2019s law and commend the out-going National Assembly for freeing the democratic space for citizens\u2019 involvement in our democratic adventure, we call on everyone to use the law, responsibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
