The Inspector General of the Namibian Police (NamPol), Lieutenant General Sebastian Ndeitunga, on Friday warned 404 Police cadets joining the force never to become “bosses” of the nation.

Ndeitunga was speaking at the closing of a six-months Police basic training course at the Pius Joseph Kaundu Training Centre in the Omaheke Region.

He said it is disheartening to note that some new Police constables tend to misunderstand their obligations when they are deployed at various duty stations.

“It is disheartening that when deployed to different Police stations, some of you misunderstand your duties of being a servant of the nation. You turn to make yourselves bosses of the nation,” said Ndeitunga.

He reminded them that as custodians of the law, their actions should reflect a humane and dignified way of handling members of the public who approach them for assistance.

The Police boss also told the new Police cadets that they will be dealing with victims of crimes such as rape and murder and should show compassion to all crime victims.

“Similarly, we are obliged to make sure that those suspected of being on the wrong side of the law are brought before competent courts of law, which will then decide on their fate, rather than subjecting them to inhumane and indecent treatment,” he emphasised.

At the same occasion, Omaheke governor Laura McLeod-Katjirua said law-enforcement agencies need a high degree of foresight in their training to be able to effectively respond to the increasing challenges of security systems in Namibia.

She thus reminded the new Police constables to know that discipline remains a strong foundation of the Police force.

“A joint effort between you and the public is of utmost important in your duties. You should know that your main function of community policing depends upon securing and maintaining community respect to a large extent,” said McLeod-Katjirua.-Nampa
