Loose Women star Denise Welch has confessed that she’s started drinking again following years battling booze and drugs – but claims she made an informed choice to get back on the bottle.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, the 52-year-old was spotted looking in high spirits out in London’s Soho looking sweaty and kissing a mystery man before cuddling up to another.<\/p>\n

However, in a bid to set the record straight about her behaviour, Denise insists that she’s not got a drink problem.<\/p>\n

Talking to this week’s Woman magazine, she said: ‘I\u2019m very easily led and if I walk into a party everyone is holding out drinks, waiting for me to live up to my reputation. It\u2019s like a challenge for me.’<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The mother-of-two admitted that while on Coronation Street, her drinking and drug-taking got to such a level that her co-star Kevin Kennedy took her to Alcoholics Anonymous.<\/p>\n

She continued: ‘I stopped drinking completely but I chose to start drinking again. I didn\u2019t fall off the wagon, I stepped off it.<\/p>\n

‘I drink at parties, I drink at awards dos, I drink when I am out with my mates and that\u2019s when you get all the pap snaps of drunk Denise.’<\/p>\n

The star insisted: ‘But bar one time (on Dancing On Ice) when I missed an 8am call, I have never missed a meeting, a photoshoot or been late for work.’<\/p>\n

However, she did confess that perhaps she needed to reign in her behaviour a bit.<\/p>\n

She mused: ‘I want to get some discipline in my life. I don\u2019t want to be the old drunk staggering round Soho House in 10 years\u2019 time…<\/p>\n

‘After a night out, my first thought in the morning is: “Oh God, Denise, what did you do?” I am mortified when I see pictures of me flashing my knickers…<\/p>\n

‘It embarrasses my kids. I am an embarrassment.’<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, Denise denied she was a ‘slummy mummy’ though she confessed: ‘I think I\u2019ve become a sort of cartoon character.’<\/p>\n

Denise added: ‘I am my own worst enemy because I play up to the image, but people make assumptions about me that are so totally off the mark.\u2019<\/p>\n

One of the stars of this year’s Dancing On Ice, Denise, who has been married to her Benidorn star husband Tim Healy, 59, for 21 years, told the magazine: ‘Okay, I am not a conventional mother.<\/p>\n

‘I hardly ever cook and when I do occasionally do the school run it\u2019ll be in my pyjama bottoms and last night\u2019s make-up. But my boys (Matt, 22, and Louis, 10) are my life.<\/p>\n

‘I have major guilt issues about working away; the hardest thing about the Dancing On Ice tour was being away from home.’<\/p>\n

Denise confessed however that her sons were worried about her drinking, saying: ‘Matt is like Saffy from Ab Fab. I\u2019ve never seen him drunk, he\u2019s like my conscience.<\/p>\n

‘He\u2019s the one who tells me off for drinking, he\u2019s the one who tells me it\u2019s time to stop the party at 4am. Louis is more like me, he\u2019ll be a party boy.’<\/p>\n

The former Coronation Street star also talked about her marriage to Tim, following her recent revelations that she’d had an affair.<\/p>\n

She explained: ‘There is a perception that Tim is the long-suffering husband and I\u2019m bad Denise. It\u2019s not true. We\u2019ve both, by our own admission, strayed.<\/p>\n

‘But we have both chosen to remain together because it\u2019s what we want. Marriage is tough…We\u2019ve admitted our mistakes and have been together 22 years.<\/p>\n

‘Tim\u2019s not easy, I\u2019m not easy but we understand each other, we have a lot of good times and we are a unit.’<\/p>\n
