{"id":432616,"date":"2011-05-30T09:41:16","date_gmt":"2011-05-30T09:41:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/05\/30\/education-minister-calls-for-commitment-among-teachers\/"},"modified":"2011-05-30T09:41:16","modified_gmt":"2011-05-30T09:41:16","slug":"education-minister-calls-for-commitment-among-teachers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/05\/30\/education-minister-calls-for-commitment-among-teachers\/","title":{"rendered":"Education Minister Calls for Commitment Among Teachers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"52.0625776012\">\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.namibian.com.na\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/img\/static\/publishers\/minibanners\/namibian180.jpg\" alt=\"The Namibian (Windhoek)\" title=\"Visit The Namibian (Windhoek)\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Oswald Shivute<\/p>\n<p>27 May 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>MINISTER of Education Abraham Iyambo has called on teachers to be committed to the profession and to turn challenges into opportunities and possibilities.<\/p>\n<p>Minister Abraham Iyambo said this when addressing teachers and education managers at Ongwediva on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>He said he would not tolerate indiscipline among teachers, adding that principals should not be afraid to discipline their teachers and pupils.<\/p>\n<p>Pulling no punches, Iyambo said he is not happy with the performance and examination results of the Oshana Region.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I call for business unusual, a mindset shift,&#8221; Iyambo said and told the teachers to believe in themselves that they are armed with teaching knowledge and skills to deliver.<\/p>\n<p>He said because of the severe flood that had struck the north-central regions this year, about 340 were closed and 130 000 pupils affected. He appealed to teachers, pupils and parents to ensure that the lost time is made up through extra classes during holidays.<\/p>\n<p>He said this year, as in previous financial years, education receives the biggest portion of the national budget.<\/p>\n<p>But despite this big allocation, performance is &#8220;not close to satisfactory and not concomitant with the said investment&#8221;, because dropouts and failure rates are terribly high.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is true for all Grades, one to 12. Are we under-preparing and under-performing? This is an irony, as we have many qualified teachers and financial resources and I am calling upon all of you dear colleagues in the Oshana Region to this year make a big difference. Work harder for learners to pass their examinations. Start today.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Iyambo said he expects teachers to perform and deliver in their classrooms, &#8220;because the future of Namibia is in their hands&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The determining factor of a quality education system is the quality of its teachers.
