HOW BARCA RATED:-

VICTOR VALDES

DIDN’T have a save to make. Well beaten by Rooney but was hardly ever under pressure. Booked. Mark (out of 10) 8

DANI ALVES

MAGNIFICENT performance, particularly up front as he gave Patrice Evra a frightening night and one he’ll want to forget. Booked. 9

ERIC ABIDAL

AFTER beating cancer, the Barca hero had any United man that came his way for breakfast, lunch and dinner. 10

GERARD PIQUE

THE world’s best centre-half! A truly inspiring performance and he spent a lot of the time as a second centre-forward. 9

JAVIER MASCHERANO

STAND-IN centre-half for the half-fit Puyol, but the former Liverpool man did enough to keep Javier Hernandez quiet. 7

SERGIO BUSQUETS

The anchor. Provided the shield for Iniesta and Xavi. When needed, showed deft touches to turn defence into attack. 8

XAVI

THE maestro. Will be missed more than most when he retires. But not by Michael Carrick. Made Giggs look past it. 10

ANDRES INIESTA

THE virtuoso. Joint second best player in the world with Xavi. Gave the entire United team a nauseating evening. 10

PEDRO

GRABBED a world-class opener, wrong-footing Van der Sar. All four of Utd’s defence had their minds on Messi. 9

LIONEL MESSI – DREAM TEAM STAR MAN

The best. Possibly the greatest football United have faced in their illustrious history. 10

DAVID VILLA

SUBLIME all-round show and his brilliant curling third goal provided the sad epitaph to Van der Sar’s playing career. 9

SUBSTITUTES

KEITA (Villa 85). Late run-out. 5

PUYOL (Alves 88). Enter Barca legend. 5

AFELLAY (Pedro 90). Joined in party. 5

Not used: Oier, Bojan, A Correia, Thiago.

***************************

HOW UNITED RATED:-

EDWIN VAN DER SAR

NOT how the Dutch keeper wanted to bow out. Caught wrong-footed for Pedro’s first goal and slow for Messi’s second. Mark (out of 10) 5

FABIO

ONE of the few United payers who actually looked comfortable on the ball going forward. 6

RIO FERDINAND

DESPITE the scoreline, didn’t actually have a bad game at the heart of United’s defence. 6

NEMANJA VIDIC

MADE some crucial challenges early on but could not cope with Barca,s speed of passing. 6

PATRICE EVRA

THIS had to be one of the Frenchman’s worst games for United. At fault for goal one at least. 4

ANTONIO VALENCIA

HIS return lifted United towards the end of the season but disappeared at Wembley. Booked. 5

MICHAEL CARRICK

ENJOYED a fine second-half of the season but was totally lost in this game. Booked. 5

RYAN GIGGS

COMBINED with Rooney for the goal but otherwise struggled with the rest of his team-mates. 6

JI-SUNG PARK

OUT there to destroy Barcelona’s creativity but simply could not stop them. 5

WAYNE ROONEY

UNITED’S one and only move had him at it’s heart, scoring a great goal. 7

JAVIER HERNANDEZ

BARELY touched the ball. United just could not find the Mexican to give him a chance. 5

SUBSTITUTES

NANI (Fabio 69). Game was gone by time he went on. 5

SCHOLES (Carrick 77), May be his last game, sad way to finish. 5

Not used: Kuszczak, Owen, Anderson, Smalling, Fletcher.

REFEREE: Viktor Kassai 7
