In fact for some caretakers, when it gets to this point, they start planning for the burial.

To clear the mystery, International Hospital Kampala (IHK) last week organized an ICU exhibition aimed at showcasing equipment and medication used in the unit, such as the life support machines.

“We found out that people don’t understand what ICU is. So, we decided to show people what it is all about because in most cases we fear that when our patients enter ICU they won’t come out alive,” said Brian Mayanja, IHK’s Senior Staff Nurse.

The ICU is where you find the most critical patients where cases of severe illness such as cancer, HIV, heart and respiratory problems are handled. According to Mayanja, IHK’s ICU handles an average of 25 patients monthly. Out of that only one or two patients die and, according to Mayanja, these are usually complicated cases that can’t be helped.

“We want to let people know that whatever is done in Nairobi or South Africa can be done here.”

“We have been growing our unit and we feel our nurses have reached the level out there,” Mayanja said.

IHK has been sending its nurses for six months’ training in India and currently the hospital has nurses handling specialties such as coronary care, cardiac catheterisation, and dialysis. Kevin Duffy, IHK’s Chief Executive Officer, says more than 75 percent of the hospital’s patients are not from IAA, the insurance arm of the hospital but rather patients referred from other hospitals, which shows IHK’s level of competence.

“We probably have the best ICU in the country and we are continuing to improve all the time,” Duffy said.

The hospital here has over five fully equipped ICU units.

<fieldset>
<legend align="center">More News on allAfrica.com</legend>
</fieldset>

AllAfrica – All the Time

Excerpt from:
IHK Demystifies Intensive Care

The Observer (Kampala) Simon Musasizi 25 May 2011 opinion ‘We want to let people know that whatever is done in Nairobi or South Africa can be done here’ When most Ugandans are referred to an intensive care unit (ICU), they prefer to be flown to Nairobi, Kenya or South Africa, because they have little faith in our local health professionals, but also because what happens in the ICU remains a mystery.
