A representative from the United Arab Emirates’ Al Wasl Football Club returned to Dubai last Sunday leaving much optimism for Villa Park-based SC Villa.

Al Sowaidi Sultan Humaid not only conveyed the news of Al Wasl’s interest in constructing Villa a stadium, he also agreed with the Ugandan side’s chairman Fred Muwema that a formal deal for the project will be signed in the next 60 days.

Humaid, sent by the club that have just tied football legend Diego Maradona to a two-year coaching contract, met Villa coaching staff, management and players at their offices in Muyenga on May 21 during his short familiarisation visit.

Muwema apparently met him on one of his tours to the Middle East from where he interested him into the Villa project.

Host of meetings

Together with Muwema, they met the Ministry of Education and Sports officials later on Friday as the club drew goalless with Victors at Wankulukuku, ironically bitter rivals Express’ home ground.

But in the next five years, they could have their home games at their new stadium to be constructed in Kampala if this budding relationship between the two clubs materialises. Through Humaid, Al Wasl have expressed willingness to do exchange programmes with Villa. But what will grab the immediate attention to Ugandans is that the approximately 15, 000 seater-capacity stadium that will cost over $10m.

Tasked by Daily Monitor to assure the Villa faithful when they can expect to see a semblance of the actual stadium sprouting, Muwema was definitive. “The next 60 days will be very important,” he said.

He also confirmed he will be leaving for Dubai on June 2 for “showdown talks” with the Al Wasl president. “We expect to discuss the exact commitment of both clubs and to have a deal signed on the whole project in the next 60 days.” Villa are the record national league champions with 16 titles.
