Nairobi \u2014 Eventually. Things are looking up. Should we start celebrating? Not just yet. Not just yet.<\/p>\n

Early this week the Cricket Kenya CEO, Tom Sears, responded to this column: “Cricket Kenya, the International Cricket Council and the (Sports) Ministry held a very positive meeting recently and are going to meet on a regular basis in the future.”<\/p>\n

Things are even getting better. The CEO says the ICC has backed CK’s widespread proposals to advance the game at all levels in the country. The proposals are a result of the wide-reaching review which followed the disappointing performance at the Cricket World Cup 2011.<\/p>\n

According to the CEO, both Cricket Kenya and ICC conducted extensive reviews in the wake of the 2011 CWC and ICC High Performance Manager Richard Done visited Kenya early this month to discuss the findings and that is when they (CK and ICC) met Kabando wa Kabando, the sports assistant minister “to discuss the review process and Kenya’s and CK’s plans for the future.”<\/p>\n

As things stand, the minister, Dr Paul Otuoma, who belatedly discovered that things were not well with cricket and called on CK to pack up and go, is yet to have a meeting with them but the meeting with Mr wa Kabando “was very positive and will be followed by a meeting with the Sports Minister and by regular meetings thereafter between the Ministry and CK representatives.”<\/p>\n

SuperSport gets on board<\/strong><\/p>\n

On a related issue, SuperSport, which has pumped in millions of rands into Kenyan football – which is continuously being abused by rowdy fans – will be the official broadcast partner for the inaugural East Africa Premier League and East Africa Cup, due from July 2.<\/p>\n

That should be good news for firms which may have felt that there is no need to sponsor teams because they will not get the mileage commensurate with the amount of money they put in.<\/p>\n

To write that CK is not trying to make us have faith in it would be unfair, but life is never fair, and local cricket fans are within their rights to say that they have been shortchanged for long, and it is time CK and the Sports Ministry got their act together and not squander the goodwill.<\/p>\n

They should start by selecting a coach who will deliver, not a hapless one like Eldine Baptiste who did not even earn the respect of his own charges and could not even face the media and admit that things were bad, partly due to his bosses, CK, which stood by him even when it was common knowledge that the national side was getting worse by the hour.<\/p>\n

Mr Sears has promised that a coach will be known in a fortnight, after the 25 foreign applicants have been whittled down to six, and eventually to one, an arduous task for a Board that is more often interested in boardroom power plays and one-upmanship than success on the crease and more often than not hides behind ICC regulations and does not openly admit failure even when it is staring at it in the face.<\/p>\n

That is the reason we should not celebrate just yet.<\/p>\n
