Sam Allardyce<\/a>.<\/p>\nThe Premier League champions were hammered 3-1 by an imperious Barcelona side at Wembley in Saturday’s Champions League final and Allardyce feels that the the 69-year old must look to add to his squad over the summer if the club is to move forward.<\/p>\n
Writing in his News of the World column, the former Blackburn boss said: “I expect Sir Alex to get the chequebook out this summer and make Manchester United significantly stronger.<\/p>\n
“To get to the next final and win it, they are going to have to improve.<\/p>\n
“Nobody knows more than him it is a necessity to get back to the spending levels they have had in the past.<\/p>\n
“You do it by buying one or two of those high-quality players per season. They lost Carlos Tevez. It is time to go and find that quality of player again.”<\/p>\n
Allardyce, who has come up against Ferguson as manager of Bolton, Newcastle and Blackburn, insisted that despite United’s league win, the Scot will still be reeling from such a damaging defeat to Pep Guardiola’s men.<\/p>\n
He said: “United had a fine season but it will not be enough for Sir Alex. I know what the Champions League means to him.<\/p>\n
“I know how it eats away at him that he’s ‘only’ won it twice at Old Trafford. He will be devastated.
It is what he considers to be the only slight on his managerial record.”<\/p>\n
Allardyce also praised Barcelona for what was a dominant performance and compared Messi with the game’s greatest ever players.<\/p>\n
He said: “They keep the ball so well, pass it so well and they wear the opposition out. That was my worry at half-time. I thought then that United’s main hope of winning would come if they were fitter than Barcelona. They weren’t.<\/p>\n
“They couldn’t get the ball for long periods and that is so tiring for players. Barcelona went up a level in the second half. Somehow they sped the tempo up and United were chasing shadows. They defended well but the quality of the goals was incredible.<\/p>\n
“Messi is in the same league as Pele, Maradona and Best. One of the greats. Sir Alex didn’t have a player like that in his line-up. This would have been his best ever win if he’d pulled it off, at Wembley in England and because of the team they were playing against.”<\/p>\n
Allardyce is strongly expected to join recently relegated West Ham in the next few days.
