The evangelist who was arrested by the Koforidua police for allegedly attempting to rape the wife of a policeman on Thursday was hauled before a Koforidua District Magistrate Court yesterday on a provisional charge of attempting to rape someone’s wife.

The 29-year-old evangelist of Power of Jesus Church at Gomoa Nyanyano near Kasoa in the Central region, Akwasi Oppong, was allegedly caught red-handed by another policeman trying to rape Joyce Odame, the wife of Lance Corporal Elvis Koomson.

The couple got married two weeks ago. The court presided over by Priscilla Yeboah did not take the plea of the suspect and remanded him into prison custody.

The prosecutor told the court that the police would need more time for investigations and therefore pleaded with the court to remand the suspect into prison custody so that he did not interfere with the process of investigation since the case was a very serious one.

Evangelist Oppong will reappear before the court on June 7, 2011, by which time the police would have been able to get more facts for prosecution. Evangelist Akwasi Oppong allegedly attempted to rape Joyce Odame at the Amsterdam Hotel, where he was lodging at Aboabo, a suburb of Koforidua.

He allegedly invited the lady for a counseling session but when the woman arrived, he demanded to have sex with her before the counseling could take place. The pastor therefore undressed completely and asked the policeman’s wife to fondle his manhood but the lady excused herself to visit the washroom.

While in the washroom, she called another policeman, Emmanuel Mensah, who is a friend to her husband and told him about the intentions of the evangelist. The policeman rushed there and arrested the evangelist after some initial resistance.

According to New Juaben Municipal Police Commander, Superintendent David Tefutor, the evangelist, sensing danger, struggled with the policeman to try and evade arrest.

He said in the process, he hit Mensah on the forehead with an empty beer bottle in the room and quickly left. The blow resulted in a big cut but the policeman raised an alarm so people around assisted him to arrest the evangelist who was hiding in a nearby bush.

The evangelist however told the police that it was the lady who tried to seduce him. According to him, he was about to check out of the hotel when the woman arrived, asking for spiritual assistance.

The evangelist explained that when the woman came in, he was in his ‘boubou’ trousers and singlet but the woman sat on the bed and ‘romantically’ tapped him on the arm. He alleged that the woman then turned her back to him and asked him to unzip her blouse for her and also her brassiere.

He said all of a sudden, the policeman in mufti opened the door and told him he was under arrest, stressing that the policeman started slapping him so he also fought back and managed to escape from the room but he realized that a lot of people were pursuing him with machetes after an alarm had been raised so he had to surrender.
