\"\"<\/a>A paper published this month in the peer-reviewed journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A, has stated that cities can break the link between high living standards and significant contributions to climate change.<\/p>\n

According to a senior fellow at the International Institute for Environment and Development\u2019s Human Settlements Group, Dr David Satterthwaite, who published the paper, the break can be done using many technologies and policies that are already available if not widely used.<\/p>\n

The paper urges policy makers to seize the potential for cities to reduce waste, pollution and resource use, whilst increasing the quality of life of their inhabitants.<\/p>\n

It also reviews evidence from studies of urban centres across the world, in both developed and developing countries, to show how such settlements can raise living standards and resilience to climate change, without necessarily increasing their emissions of greenhouse gases.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost people assume that cities are centres of high consumption and waste generation \u2014 and so are also drivers of climate change,\u201d says Satterthwaite. He however opines that \u201cthis is not the case for many cities.\u201d<\/p>\n

The paper further shows low and middle income countries that develop the growth of their cities need not come do so at a high environmental cost \u2014 while in high-income countries it will be possible to greatly reduce carbon emissions without sacrificing living standards or economic opportunities.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost cities have tremendous potential to delink high living standards from high resource use and greenhouse gas emissions,\u201d adds Satterthwaite. \u201cThis needs to be understood and acted on if dangerous climate change is to be avoided,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n
