The Vice-President, Mr John Dramani Mahama, has stated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will emerge from the July 8, congress as a formidable and united party ready to retain power in the 2012 general election.

He has, therefore, appealed to supporters of the party to remain focus and calm in spite of the recent internal wrangling in the party.

Mr Mahama said that when he addressed a durbar at the Techiman main lorry park as a prelude to the inauguration of a GH¢75,000 meat shop at the Techiman Central Market in the Brong Ahafo Region.

The meat shop was constructed by theTechiman Municipal Assembly to ensure that meat was sold in a more hygienic environment.

Mr Mahama, in addressing the large crowd, said the regional tours conducted by President Mills to inspect and inaugurate development projects initiated within the two years of his first four year term in office was to let Ghanaians know that the NDC government was committed to the total development of the country.

The Vice-President therefore noted that it was only sceptics and detractors of the government who had refused to acknowledge and appreciate the massive development projects embarked upon by President Mills’ administration within its two years in office.

Mr Mahama stated that the NDC government within its two years in government had been able to initiate and complete a lot of development projects and it was only a quarter of it that the President had been inspecting and inaugurating on his regional tours which was being highlighted by the media.

“If the government has been able to embark on such massive infrastructure development across the nation within two years, then what will happen after its two terms in office. Your guess is as good as mine,” he told the cheering crowd.

The Vice-President promised that the government would continue to pursue human-centred development programmes that would bring remarkable improvement in the living conditions of Ghanaians since that was the core mandate of the government and a pledge to the good people of Ghana.

Mr Mahama commended the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) for initiating development projects but urged them to do more to help bring a remarkable improvement in the living conditions of the people.

The Vice-President urged beneficiaries of the meat shop project to always strive to keep their environment clean and also to maintain the facility to attract patronage.

Mr Mahama, in response to an appeal for the construction of a new slaughter house, said the government would partner the assembly and its development partners to construct the new slaughter house.

On an appeal for a new fire tender for Techiman, the Vice-President also pledged that the municipality would be given one of the new fire engines imported by the government recently to fight fire in the fast growing commercial hub of the region.

The Techiman Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Alex Kyeremeh, for his part, said since the assumption of office two years ago, the assembly had been able to initiate and complete a total of 33 classroom blocks for basic schools to eradicate school under trees and also 5,000 dual desks to stop the use of kitchen stool and table as desk by pupils in the municipality.

He added that the assembly had been able to reshape 250 kilometres of feeder roads in the municipality to ensure the smooth transportation of farm produce and people to the commercial centres as well as the provision of potable water among others.
